What's the best book you've EVER read ?

Posted: 22/10/2014 at 20:30

I've already booked to see the National Theatre production of Treasure Island early next year, transmitted to my lovely local cinema (leather seats, glass of wine by your side) (I always wanted to be a pirate...but a nice one).

Recycling Bin

Mine don't stand on soil, the little red worms that are in the compost bin are not the same as your average earth worm. I have asked Garden Organic how the little red worms arrive in the bin and, though they are normally pretty scientific in their answers, they freely admit that the worms ...just arrive. I always start a new bin with a good shovel of horse manure so I don't have to rely on the worm fairy

Mine is surrounded by weed suppressing fabric, so it doesn't spread.

Don't put in Perennial weeds with their seeds/roots, unless you have drowned them in a bucket of water for 2 weeks (this is v. smelly!) Evergreens like Leylandii will take years to break down, so is not worth it.

RunnerB, you need roughly a 50/50 mix of greens (old bedding plants, old cabbage leaves, carrots from the back of the fridge that have gone furry etc ) and browns (scrunched up sheets of paper, torn up cardboard). Move them around a bit every 2 weeks either with a compost stirrer (buy on line) or a garden fork to get air in there.

If you have any more queries or problems with it, we will be happy to help

Greenfly in shed

Dove, thank you for that link I don't think it was the Tiger beetle, did not have such long legs etc, but I think it may have been the Green Shield beetle (will I get stamps with that?). This apparently lives on plant sap which may explain the appearance of one of my tomato plants.

I found some green beetles/flies in the g/h, they look like a green version of lily beetles. Do you know what they are Dove?

Alan, you don't need to be so vigorous in the stirring; just move the stuff a bit once every 2 weeks to make sure there is air in there - if you mix the type of material as you put it in (e.g. grass cuttings with balled up sheets of newspaper) it won't require stirring like it's a christmas pud (omg, I used the C word)
