Potting my bamboo

Posted: 08/11/2012 at 10:04
Thanks for the advice guys.

Identifying it may not be easy. I originally pulled up a young shoot from a larger plant at work to get my bamboo. Judging by the leaf and cain colour etc it could still be a number of varieties. The mother plant is around 4 meters tall with a spread of about 3-4 meters.

I've heard stories of bamboo popping up in neighbours gardens 3 or 4 doors down..... surely not???

I'm going to put my bamboo in a pot in the ground as a precaution, incase it gets out of control. I'm going to use one of them big rubber buckets. Do I need to put holes in the base for drainage?? Will the roots grow through the holes? If I don't put holes in, and do I risk drowning the plant?

I've actually gone and bought 2 now, an osakszuki and a orange dream (3 meter max).  Going to keep both in pots for now and learn about keeping them in good shape etc and see how things go.  Taking on board everyone advice, we'll see how it goes, they may never make the ground and stay in pots.

'taking out the leader' ? Would this be the main vertical branch growing up through the centre?

Sorry for being vague, im looking at getting a particular acer for the garden (osakazuki), but it could potentially get too big for my garden. There are other types of acer which dont get so big, but i really want this one.

Is it common to yearly prune a tree to stop it getting too big?

For example, a want a tree which which potentially could grow to 10 meters (too big for the garden),  but i dont want to grow more than 4 meters.

Could there be long term damaging effectsto the tree or is this normal?

Shrub or tree? what will determine???

Shrub or tree? what will determine???

Posted: 19/10/2012 at 12:59

Excuse my extreme lack of knowledge here, i've only just started taking an interest in gardening.

I'm after a Japanese acer, and i undersand they can come in the form of trees or large shrubs.....

The ones i've seen in the garden centre are maybe 2 foot tall, but how do i know if they will be trees or large shrub?  Is it all down to how i prune them or is it genetical?

I'm hoping to have a tree with eventually a few feet of trunk etc

Some of the acers in the garden centre are single stem and some have 2 coming from the soil.  Is this what will determin trees and large shrubs?

Again, excuse my gardening ignorance and lack of knowledge
