ground cover planting season

Posted: 27/08/2016 at 16:03

If you would like something evergreen - please consider pachysandra. Although it will grow in part of deep shade, it is just as happy in sunny spots in my garden. It has little white flowers in the Spring, always looks fresh, provides plenty of offshoots, is a doddle to take cuttings from. In this bed it is planted to trail over stones and sets off Japanese anemones, grasses and fuchsias beautifully.

Bare stems on escallonia

Thanks Verdun. I shall certainly be very vigilant next Spring. As there were so many lovely flowers (which obviously eventually turned brown) I think I missed the brown leaf issue.

Thanks for the advice. I shall get the secateurs out tomorrow. This was a large size shrub when planted - and I didn't think about snails. Will it always have to be protected from them?

Bare stems on escallonia

I was so pleased with the escallonia Donard I was given earlier this year. It has been well-planted and kept watered. The yellowing on the leaves seemed to start after it had flowered profusely - and a lot fell off. I applied insecticide and now have a number of bare branches ....will they recover? I am loathe to cut them out ....

Looking forward to Winter

I love my echinacea but lose quite a few every Winter. As we live in Dorset I think the wet rather than cold weather is the problem. I am thinking of using some sort of mulch and covering individual plants with flower pots. What sort of mulch would be appropriate? I know a heavy mulch isn't recommended - but could I use bark chippings?

vine weevil : do i need to treat all containers?

Posted: 02/08/2016 at 18:02

I have a large number of pots, but it was only the ones containing heucheras that were attacked by vine weevil last year (all seven of them). I replaced the plants and these are the ones I'm going to be dosing this month. I suspect the same culprit got my polyanthus too ...

Unexpected advice re fuchsias

I agree, Verdun ...... I think I was just concerned that the advice maybe meant there was something wrong with potash feeds for fuchsias....... Thanks everyone.

Unexpected advice re fuchsias

I always feed my fuchsias with a high-potash/tomato type fertiliser to encourage flowering. But I have read several articles recently where this is not recommended - and a general purpose feed suggested. Why is this? What do other people do?

What happened when I was away?

Many thanks for all your ideas. I can't see any sign of caterpillars but have trimmed back, sprayed, removed some soil and fed. I do hope they will survive ...... Just thinking ahead .... What do people think about preventative spraying? Would it be worth considering?

I usually have a lovely display of  erysimum, but came back from holiday yesterday to find many of them looking like this - loss of colour on leaves and numerous holes  what has happened - and what should I do?
