Early pruning advised?

Posted: 15/01/2014 at 20:26
I have a number of clematis which I always prune in late February. But this year, although it's only mid-Jan, we've had well above average temperatures and all the plants are showing lots of buds. So should I prune them now - or leave them another five weeks or so? I don't want them to become leggy if I leave them too long.....advice appreciated.

I've found this thread really interesting - and can't wait for Spring to come, so that I can divide my Lucifers......I think I'll just replant the top corms and add good compost. But I'm wondering how deep I ought to plant them. I remember reading somewhere that it was quite important - but can't remember what the advice was!

December 2013 Issue - The Calendar

The 2014 calendar is larger than the 2013 one - and the photos are great! Many thanks to the production team! I think it's great.

I want to grow again

I'd forgotten all about them! Thank you so much for bringing them back into my mind - primula obconica! I used to grow them very successfully, in a cold greenhouse and then had them for ages in a bright hall. They were very much admired. I think I had one poor year - and stopped growing them. Now I'm going to try again....

Heathers: from my kitchen window I look out over a circular bed which is full of a variety of summer goodies, but my favourite time of year is Winter, when the sixteen heathers planted to "join up" round the outside look wonderful. I trim them back immediately after flowering and use a lot of leaf mold. I love them!

Thanks Lyn. Just wondered about the roots because I've got another possible site for a laurel - but there's not much depth of soil. Thanks for info.

I'd like to give my laurel hedge a bit of tlc - but not sure what you mean by "middle of the branches" . Do laurels have deep roots?

Daddy long legs - a serious problem?

Thank you Verdun and Dovefromabove. If I could avoid insecticides I would - but the damage two years ago was horrific, so I'm on to Amazon. Thanks again

Daddy long legs - a serious problem?

We are inundated with crane flies - both inside and outside. Literally scores of them on our windows and white walls. Two years ago rooks ripped up our lawn in Spring, looking for chafer grubs and I'm worried that leather jackets may cause the same problem. Am I right in thinking that an insecticide should be applied now, in the Autumn?

Thanks, Verdun. That is just the info. I wanted. I will now be able to identify the most effective fungicide. Thanks again. P.S. No, no pears - one less worry!
