Stipa tenuissima - comb or cut ?

Posted: 19/03/2016 at 21:16

I have found conflicting advice too. I have over thirty of them dotted through the garden. Like you, I find they flop later in the season. For the last two years I have combed them thoroughly in March, then in June, IF they need it, I cut them back by up to half. They regrow beautifully very quickly and look good again. Hope this helps.

I think you're right. I'm going to dig them all up. Would you recommend treating the soil with anything before I replant?

Very disappointed to report that I couldn't find any vine weevil grubs ( never thought I'd say that!). Only 2 degrees out there - but dug up about ten. Although the roots are sparse, there is no sign of them having been eaten away. Do you have any more ideas? I suppose I should remove all thirty plants. What do I need to do then? Thanks to everyone in advance.

Anyone done any gardening today - Version 2

Hostas, allium and echinacea starting to appear ..... No doubt the slugs won't be far behind, so sprinkled handfuls of grit around.

I was so pleased with the polyanthus in my garden last year (picture attached). I added lots more in the Autumn - and this is what they look like this year. (picture attached). What on earth are the corky growths on each one? I planted some more of the same variety in a different part of the garden and they are fine.

Starting Dahlias 2016

I over wintered the tubers of two dahlias I particularly liked and have now put them in pots (sunny South). I'm hoping to get some cuttings later on ...... Will I be able to replant the tubers as well? Which are likely to do better - tubers or cuttings?

What's the best app?

I know the gardening app I'd recommend: I really enjoyed trying out ideas and seeing what it would look like before I committed myself to anything. I'm not allowed to mention names, am I?   Just think of "guns".
