My lovely new sleeved orchid...

Posted: 05/11/2012 at 11:14

I have never grown this lovely plant before, but have just been given one. I have done quite a bit of research - but can't find the answer to one question. It is in a transparent pot with some roots hanging out over the edge. I know the roots like air, but the whole thing is  very top-heavy and I'm sure it will topple over. Will it be OK for me to stand it inside a larger, decorative pot? I could fill an inch or so of the space between the two pots with gravel.....but what about the roots hanging over the top? Can I squeeze them (ever so gently!) into the larger pot?

Outdoor Christmas lights

Your comments were appreciated chrissieb, Alina W and Dovefromabove. I am not stupid, sotongeoff and am well aware that lights are available "everywhere". I'm going to start early this year and hopefully find just what I want. I simply wanted to know whether anyone had already found them.

I would love to put some Christmas/fairy lights around an archway in our garden Electrical requirements already sorted. But I've never been able to find what I want! Can anyone help? I'd like them to be white/ silver and I don't want them to flash (gives me a headache! All ideas welcome.

Can you recommend a shrub for this border?

Aother distinct possibility! Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to see what's available locally.

Many thanks for all the suggestions. I hate to admit it, but I don't like the colour yellow, which rules out a few! I'm particularly interested in the nandina idea. I've been doing some research and it seems as though "Richmond" is the one to look for. I haven't been able to locate one yet but there are lotsof good nurseries here in Dorset.

Many thanks again.

I have just removed a poorly-performing hydrangea from the spot you can see to the left of the pyracantha. As you can see, this south-facing border is backed by leylandii and I think a lack of moisture will have been part of the problem.....plants tend to grow outwards here, rather than up. I'd like to replace it with a shrub which has an upright habit, will show up against the leylandii and (preferably) be evergreen. I'm considering a purple-leaved berberis. What do other people think? (We live in Dorset, so the climate is (usually!) mild.

Planting wallflowers

Posted: 03/10/2012 at 21:28

It will soon be time to plant these lovely flowers again. They are so adaptable - last year I bought too many (not unusual), so planted the spares in a box, where they stayed until March. I was able to fill in many gaps in the garden and the flowers produced were equally as good as those planted in October,

Am I right in planting them deep? I'm sure I've read that advice somewhere. Any other helpful hints? Do people nip out the tops when planting? Feed them?

I thought I'd miss the BBC forum. Not a bit! I love this one. It is far better.

Autumn planting of Alliums (not!!)

I'm definitely going to try potting alliums this year. It sounds such a good idea. I hadn't realized you could do this and then place them where you want in the Spring. But what size pots do I need? How deep do I plant them? I know they are all different sizes, but I'm talking about allium schubertii and other large types.
