Ah, typical Bob, you admire the sun from the window, looking forward to getting in the garden, thinking of the jobs to be done, then about an hour before work finishes it clouds over, and then, hopes are dashed....godamn british weather lol  !

Talkback: Growing pears

Posted: 27/06/2013 at 19:00
My 2 yr old pear tree is healthy enough growing in a large patio container, but as was mentioned, suffered from june drop, i asked for advise at a local nursery and they suggested feeding it with tomato feed and in a months time give it FBB to nourish it. will this help bring it round, alas there are no buds on now they all dropped. Hopefully next year if i feed early on when new growth is there, i should eventually get fruit....

Hi John, I do not know which varieties these are as they were just labelled green and yellow in my local nursery  I guess I will just have to wait and see and I will harvest at 5 or 6 inches. Thanks for the feedback year I will choose named varieties and do my homework! Live and Learn eh !

Hi all, it's my first time growing courgettes too, one green and one yellow each in it's own biggish patio tub, they do seem to like lots of water and they are growing so fast! no sign of any flowers yet but by the sound of it they don't take long to get going! From 2 plants how many courgettes can I expect?

I have grown lots of foxglove seedlings (from a packet, not wild) a couple of months ago, they are about 4" high now and look really healthy. I usually keep the seed packet so I can refer back, but i seem to have thrown it away (or composted it) Can any one offer advice as to the best time to plant outside, I remember something about them flowering next year, so does this mean I overwinter them in GH or plant out now and wait! ?

Hi Ritna, only yesterday I was speaking to a gardener at my local nursery and i asked him why, on my pear tree, had all the buds dropped off after flowering, he said that it sounds like I had not been feeding it, only watering it. So he suggested I feed it as soon as I got home with tomato feed and then after a week, sprinkle fish, blood and bone around the base of the tree and water in, he doesn't think I will get fruit this year but if i carry on with his advice, then next year i should be hopeful for a crop.So I will definately feed regularly and then next year as soon as the weather warms, start feeding again, fingers crossed!! Hope this may be of help.
