courgettes

Posted: 11/05/2014 at 10:52

As an experiment, I took my weakest looking Black Forest yesterday and put it into the cold frame. Quite overcast weather so doubt was a very cold night but either way, today (v gloomy and chilly) it looks happier than inside!

So, reckon I'll take that as a sign to put the rest in too. Will need to make some room... I've got various marigolds in pots bursting out of the coldframe so hoping they can go in pots / the ground now.

my climbing (black forest) courgettes seem to be growing well enough indoors. what do people think about getting them into the big wide world, though? maybe another week inside, a week or two in my coldframe then into the ground..?

Beetroot problems...

My beets have actually done pretty well, despite their soggy start / red leaves in open ground. They're mostly growing new leaves which aren't red which seems promising!

I've been nervously watching out for signs of beet leaf miners though - which have basically destroyed my crops in previous years (despite people generally saying they don't cause too much of a problem). I've been looking most days for signs of larvae on the underside of the leaves and suddenly, today, I noticed a group on one leaf - and on another, and on most of the plants!

I've scraped them all off. Desperately hoping that if I can stop them getting established, I might actually have a decent crop this year...

Mine look exactly the same - just waiting for some pods to appear! Then I'll pinch out the tops to try and ward off blackfly...

Frost

Thanks all. It's not (only!) laziness which is why I'm asking! My two year old especially will invariably try and attack anything fleeced so I'd rather keep it to a minimum. Thanks for the newspaper tip dovefromabove - helpful as I probably don't have quite enough for everything. Although I could do something about that...

Frost

I'm in South London but sounds like even here there will be frosts come the weekend - gah! I've got a roll of fleece but I'm just working out what I need to do...

My broad beans, peas and garlic were all planted last Autumn and are frost-hardy - but does that apply now the beans & peas have flowered / set?

I'm also a bit worried about my blackberry/raspberry canes as they've been growing strongly / have lots of buds.

My beetroot presumably is especially vulnerable. Half of it has turned red from too much rain but the other half is looking healthy. And my potatoes have got shoots coming out of the top of their containers so no scope for earthing up.

Basically, i guess it all needs fleecing to be safe?!

Courgettes wilting

I've still got mine in a 6 cell tray - Black Forest climbing variety so they're growing up rather than out. Just getting first true leaves so I presume they can stay in there for a while longer? My plan is then to pot the, on to say 4" pots and put them in cold frame for a week or so, then into the ground (poss with fleece). Does that sound sensible?

When is the last time to sow tomato seeds

Cool! Actually my seedlings are starting to look less leggy so I'm a bit more optimistic. I'm not confident enough to post a pic yet though
