Garlic problems

Posted: 29/03/2014 at 12:17

I planted my garlic as usual in November. The mild winter has meant it's had lots of green growth from the start but, in recent weeks, some of the plants have been bending over as if they're pushing themselves out of the ground. I've basically been covering them back up with more earth and they seem happy enough but I'm a bit bemused as to what's happening. Any ideas?

Yeah, pretty much identical to my 2014 plan dovefromabove!

Tomato Feed - Yes or No

Although my tomato harvest last year was v good, I'm holding off a bit longer before starting seeds indoors (probably till mid/late Apr). I started them about this time last year but the cold end to Spring meant I kept them inside longer than they'd have liked and they were somewhat light-starved - I've only got a small coldframe, no proper greenhouse/conservatory. Having said that, they recovered v well but thought I'd give this later approach a go...

Pruning raspberries

Thanks loads dovefromabove!

I think I've just been a bit wary generally about pruning now in case winter suddenly bites?

I've also got a blackberry bush. I cut back last year's fruiting canes in the autumn. The main new one, though, looks pretty dead from halfway up - below that looks nice and healthy. Should I prune that too?

I got 20 charlottes from thompson morgan - only 2.99... Currently chitting away, although they gave me a real variety of sizes and the smaller ones seem to be shrivelling already when really I've got at least a month before I want to out them out I reckon.

I had a potter around the garden earlier and was half thinking it was time to prune my (autumn fruiting) raspberry canes down to ground level. Problem is they've already got new buds on the canes so have I missed the chance to do this? Mild winter strikes again, I guess...

Beetroot Problems

i have real problems with leaf miners on my beets. Everyone seems to say that you need to try and pick off the larvae / mined leaves but that the roots themselves shouldn't really be affected. I do find though that my plants get so affected that it takes much longer for roots to swell. any tips? I'd like to try them again this yr.

so, mrs bf kindly got me this lemon tree. it appears healthy enough - has a few green lemons which seem to be getting bigger, plus some new flowers have recently emerged. i'm a bit clueless about what pruning i should or shoudn't be doing though.

the lowest branch, to the right of the pic, has really shot up. no sign of flowers on it and it's now overtaken the rest of the tree. i wondered whether it was a sucker but somehow it looks too solid?

i've had the tree a few months now and it clearly came 'ready pruned' in that at various points you can see other growth was cut back so this branch must have been deliberately left.i know nothing about fruit trees so i'm inclined to play it safe. having said that, the way it's growing doesn't quite look right to me...

any advice gratefully accepted!

Tomato’s haven’t started to ripen yet – Anything I can do?

Posted: 18/09/2013 at 07:57

The biggest problem with the autumnal weather we've had in the UK for the last week I've found is that the heavy rain has split some of the toms - although I've been pretty pleased with this year's harvest so far (so different to 2012). I was close to thinking I'd pick everything and ripen them indoors - but then I see London is forecast 23C by the weekend...
