When is the last time to sow tomato seeds

Posted: 29/04/2014 at 08:20

Cool! Actually my seedlings are starting to look less leggy so I'm a bit more optimistic. I'm not confident enough to post a pic yet though

Hah! I'm a long way east of you here in SE London...

I've done both over the years - raised plants from seed and bought small plants. It might just be coincidence but I've found that seed-grown toms are less prone to disease, fungus, blight etc.

John Harding - do you have a photo of your seedlings? I haven't got the same set-up as you but I'm interested in what toms 'should' look like at this stage! I know mine never start out brilliantly as I'm quite limited space-wise inside but they seem to catch up nicely once in their final positions.

I think in hindsight last year I could probably have moved them from indoors to cold frame a little earlier but temps were so low. May hasn't started brilliantly here in SE Eng but no sign of frosts at least (famous last words). I'm hoping by having held off on sowing my toms, though, that I've bought some insurance.

I'm growing some Sweet Aperitif this year (and Black Cherry, Flamingo, Sungold, Katiebell) and it was very noticeable they were the last to germinate - not that I think it matters particularly! They're a similar height to yours - whereas all the others have shot up, 1"+. It's a south facing window but i think the light levels aren't great so I usually have leggy seedlings but I'll bury the stems when I pot them up and that seems to sort them out.

most of my tom seedlings went very purple last year, as I held off on putting them outside until the very last because of the cold spring. As it was, they recovered incredibly quickly as soon as they were getting full sunlight outside and I don't think it really held them back at all.

This is actually the first year I've used fertiliser - Chempak. It's certainly had an impact on the green growth but not sure if it'll translate into bigger bulbs...

The recent rain has perked my garlic up significantly. It was starting to look distinctly droopy with the yellowing you describe. Ok, my fault for not watering more but hopefully no harm done. I also put some onion fertilser around each plant and that, combined with the rain, has made a massive difference. Leaves look much greener, plants are more upright etc.

Hmm, ok, my web research suggests too much water can do exactly this to beetroot. Although they're in raised beds, it was a very wet weekend down here so I guess that's it. Doesn't sound fatal but I may just sow more seeds in modules as insurance..

I've generally found planting beets in modules works well. You can then separate the plants when planting out so avoids thinning which I always hate.

Ho hum. At least I've got time (and seeds) to try again...
