Thanks for replies - theres no mildew as otherwise the growth is healthy & its not the normal yellowing/drying off. Its definitely chew marks until theres no top left.

Slug Pubs

Thomas, wildlife in the garden is essential, and yes birds will take some slugs - but don't feel bad about killing the little blighters! Beer traps are good - small yogurt pots are ideal sunk in the ground and keep the liquid level with the soil. Dont know about putting them in the compost, but leaving them in an odd corner would let the birds get them. I wouldn't imagine theres much alcohol in them to affect the birds.

Onions

Having grown onions from sets for a number of years, I am baffled at this years miserable crop. Over the past month or so the tops have gradually been eaten away until now there is no top growth. I have lifted the bulbs which are small but intact. What could be eating the tops? I have never had problems with slugs or birds with onions and the garlic next to them is fine. I do get cats but never known them to eat onions either.

type of plant

These are great houseplants. 2 tips for them: cut dead flowers back to new growth and they will flower again. To propagate, simply look for stems with immature roots growing out - cut below and pot up. They will take off fairly quickly.

Bee hotel full!

I attached a bee/insect house to the house wall in March this year. Its about 6 feet up on a south facing wall. There's no activity apart from some curious spiders - will it be awhile till bees take residence?
