Poorly mountain ash

They like moist well draining soil, is the are too damp? They also like full sun to flourish. Am just wondering if it is something simple like adding drainage and feed rather than blight?

Plagues of caterpillars each year on our geraniums

Posted: 10/04/2014 at 10:46

If you have a lot of caterpillars on the plants then it is a yuck job to pick them off as sheer numbers is quite sickening. I collected 60 off just 2 plants last spring. My kids fed them leaves - I put them in the council compost bin when they slept and they went off to a better place. Provado or Bayer have a spray that kills off pests like caterpillars - whatever the stuff that kills off Lupin greenfly.

Lawn full of worm casts - please help!!

Worm casts are supposed to be the MOST wonderful soil/growing medium?

True, but when they get wet they turn to mud just like the rest of the soil underneath. So If you try and brush wet worm casts it sticks like glue or smears all over the lawn.

Sentimental Plants

Posted: 09/04/2014 at 16:23

I bought a Japanese maple in memory of my parents. It is a twin trunk tree, red with deeply filigreed leaves. My mum died the day we found out that my wife was pregnant with my daughter and I think that she heard me when she was in a coma as she rubbed my hand. She died the next day with my dad following after, so the maple is my sentimental plant.

The MPT seedlings look totty in those pots, but should double in size this year with and branch out. Watch for the roots trying to go through the pot into the ground!

You can spray for caterpillars, though I find going out in sunny days and at dusk and collecting them works wonders. I normally squish them or through them over to next doors veg plot

Bamboo query

Posted: 09/04/2014 at 16:11

Bamboo should like wet and mild, mine put on new growth in winter, sending out shoots. They do naturally lose leaves now. I am wondering if air circulation is too poor in your car port, causing mould? So I would leave the leaves and stalks and let the wind and nature take its course.

Pruning wise, I only thin out stalks but some people do cut Bamboo when they have reached their desired height - it is up to you if you think 4ft is the right height. Those pruned stalks do not grow taller, only new ones will.

Trees

I would say that it is not too late to move self grown trees now. If 2 years old then the root system will not be too extensive and if you dig and not pull them out then they have a very high chance of growing on. G

What (elusive) plant do you crave?

Variegated daphniphyllum ( Daphniphyllum himalaense ssp. macropodum)

Is it box blight or not ????
