How warm is it with you today?

20C now and pitch dark outside. I just put candles in the pumpkin...all fairly odd.

18C but lots of cloud cover. While liking the warm wind I get confused as a associate the short days of this time of year with cold winds.

Plastic bird spikes, something like this but smaller and more robust would stop kids climbing:

As long as you do not put up glass in cement then they are legal.

Identifying Plants and flowers

#7 is Cordyline terminalis aka Ti. It is a houseplant in the UK as are most of the plants in the pics.

#8 is a type of bromeliad.

A trip to BnQ or Homebase or the like's home plant section will give you the name of the others.

Plants in France

It all depends on what plants. If you go to Spain then succulents tend to be cheap as plants like agave now grow wild and they pup easily.

The supermarkets tend be cross border so they have magnitude buying power, hence a plant might be 3 euro across their shops (say Carrefour). The UK supermarkets are only really found in the UK so they have less buying power. There is also the costs of bringing plants from Italy, Spain, Netherlands etc across the channel etc.

Rare plants though are different. They do tend to be much cheaper in the UK than in Europe and in the US.

magnolia tree dead?

Do the nail check. Rub your finger nail on the trunk. If it is green underneath, then it is fine and should come back next year. If brown, then it is dead. Magnolia do suffer from branch die back when the roots are cut, so hopefully that is all.

Rapidly growing Acer in a small front garden

It looks like an acer palmatum atropurpureum to me Nutcutlet. Defo not Acer platanoides. Winter is the right time to prune as Charliebot has said. Just thin out the branches that prevent light coming in and try to picture the tree fully leaved and get a light shape out of it.

Begonia tuber storage

As Khakibos has said make sure that there are no pests in the roots/in the tuber itself. Vine weevil grubs love them and it is not fun finding dozens of grubs when going to pot them up in spring, trust me.

"Bubble wrap with big bubbles is best." Exactly what I was going to say. It is to do with the heat transfer rate that I cannot quite remember.

greenhouse for Aeonium arboreum

I always try to keep my greenhouse above 5C and have a paraffin heater. It is a similar size to yours and also polycarbonate. A 60w heater will be fine. If it has a thermostat then that would save going out and switching it off and on.
