Jacobs Ladder & Japanese Camellia

@Green Fingered Mikey - that is a great story on how we come together with a common hobby.

The mystery of the closed greenhouse

Posted: 22/04/2014 at 12:31

Certainly mice as everyone else has said. Try and clear the greenhouse as much as possible to avoid hiding places and block entry points with those cheap metal brillo pads (mice do not chew them). [confession, my greenhouse is very messy with bubble wrap all over the place and a shelf unit leaning alarmingly to the right]

PS, keep a look out for vine weevil and slugs - I have found a few over the past few weeks in the greenhouse at dusk.

My grass seed is growing (help please)

I wonder if the Roundup is killing any new growth. You really did not have to kill off all the grass just to level the lawn. I would buy sand to level the lawn then lay turf. Seed grown grass is fine only for gardens with very little traffic walking on it.

European florists tend to sell some rare-ish plants suchs as Norfolk Island pine, Pseudopanax ferox etc. Even if you get a Danish name, you should be able to find a site with the Danish name and brackets its Latin name, and from that you can easily get the English name. I have done that a few times around Europe and Asia.

The Camilla leaves look rather like Portuguese laurel, but maybe as they are so young. I find Camilla cuttings very slow to grow for the first few years, keeping it in a pot will help give it boost by allowing you to put them in a greenhouse over winter to speed up rooting and growth.

poorly plant eek!

Mine dropped a lots of leaves last year (to the point of 'is it dead') and next doors (literally through the fence) kept growing and looking good. This year mine has lots of new shiny red leaves and theirs is losing lots of leaves. Literally 30cm apart. By summer both will be fine.

Could be lack of water and drying winds. Is it planted too close to a wall?

They naturally lose some leaves during spring, can look quite alarming at times and is a question quite commonly asked.

Can anyone identify this tree?

Yes, Cherry, possibly wild Cherry. You can take cuttings quite easily. Best is to cut off a branch close to the trunk and stick that in the ground where you want it - do that in Oct/Nov and it should root by April and grow away.

I rooted some 3 years ago and gave them to next door. They are now 6ft plus and thickening out now.
