B&Q M.Purpose Compost Issues.

Posted: 04/05/2012 at 15:58

And regarding the peat/peat free issue. It is perfectly possible to make good, balanced and safe peat-free compost - the manufacturers are just being lazy, greedy and downright negligent when they supply the plant-killing rubbish we are faced with at the moment.

B&Q M.Purpose Compost Issues.

Posted: 04/05/2012 at 15:50

Problems with B&Q Multi purpose compost ? YES.

I have lost all my tomatoes, most of my beans (3 sickly looking things left), dahlias and sunflowers potted on into the stuff are turning yellow and look quite ill. There is definitely an issue here.

Anyone use Twitter at all ? Seems it's the only way for things to get noticed nowadays, and maybe a few phone calls to the newspapers too.

Does everyone know about the rhs plant finder ?

A handy online tool. You can specify plant colours, soil type, aspect, height, garden style etc. Very useful for plant ideas

Another suggestion - dwarf fruit tree. Apples, pears, plums, cherries or even something more exotic if you have the climate.

Salad leaves

Posted: 26/04/2012 at 19:22

I have just read the report that says salad leaves mixtures will not be available after this season because of a European directive.  Which means to get the scrumptious salads I am now enjoying i will have to buy many packets of seeds.

The seed companies will get round this by selling multi individual sachets in a "mixed seed" outer packet, so we will end up with the same product really. It is also possible to sell non-regulated seed as mixes so that's another way round it as well.

Work Trousers

Didn't see the programme but Monty often wears "fishtail back" trousers held up with braces. Nice gear, but not cheap. Use google for more info and stockists.

Mulching after rain - compacting soil?

Posted: 23/04/2012 at 19:08

The soil may be damp but it is also still cold, and mulching (unless you are using black plastic) at this point can stop it warming up properly, which your seedlings and young plants won't like but fungus etc will. I'd leave it until the weather is due to change, let the soil warm and then mulch

sheep manure

Posted: 18/04/2012 at 15:32

Is sheep manure as good as cow or horse manure?  I ask because I can get an abundance of it.

Sheep manure is top stuff. Higher in potash than cow or horse and makes v.good liquid fertiliser too.

What's the weather like in your area?

have had no success with sweet pepper seeds at all, any advice out there?

Do you mean they are not germinating ? They need to be quite warm to get them set off - sunny window indoors and covered should do.

Wet, rainy, grey. This time last year it was so dry that the soil was turning to dust, today puddles.
