What to do with lemon plants

Posted: 09/05/2013 at 14:45

I do have a workbench with a north facing window in the back of the unheated garage. If I can clear it off that might do the trick. Otherwise I'll have a look at constructing a shelter.

Too many raspberries

Thanks everyone.  The whole of that end of the garden is a mess, so I'll cut them all back to the ground, pull out the ones round the edges that are overgrowing shrubs, and see what happens this year. I'll at least get fruit this year, and can decide whether to try to contain what's left as suggested above, or remove it all next year.

I'm new. When I start a new thread there's a line to enter a description. What am I supposed to put in there? Is it a list of keywords for a search engine, or something somebody is going to read?

...or maybe none of the above.

Too many raspberries

We inherited raspberry canes in our overgrown garden. They are very tall and have gone bezerk. I plan to spray them, chop them down, and dig them out. We would like to keep some in this spot though. Would it be best to dig out some plants and keep them somewhere else while we clear the madness completely - or try to leave a reasonable proportion of them intact.

I don't know what variety they are but they fruit well (in the autumn) and taste very good.

Garlic - progress report

Posted: 08/05/2013 at 15:42

I'd be interested in knowing what variety it was BF206, or if it was from a supermarket.

I bought some strange garlic from the supermarket. It had a very thick skin round each clove, and this thick skin smelled terrible i.e. normal garlic x 10 (especially when cooked, when you woudl expect it to smell sweeter). Would this have been in a state not normally seen in supermarkets, or an unusual type of garlic?

What to do with lemon plants

Thanks Alina. Do you mean a shelter, like something to keep the wind off, or something with a roof on? if I bought a greenhouse would that do if left unheated, but with the fleece round plants and pots pots as you suggest?

I didn't know lemons could be pruned like that. I might do that, but I really want to see how big and gorgeous I can get them I also want lemons, although I know there isn't much chance. I could get lemons if I bought plants from the garden centre, but that's cheating.

MORNING FORKERS

Posted: 07/05/2013 at 10:23

Good morning. Today I made hay.

We (well my husband mostly) have cut the lawn twice this year, but don't have the lawnmower collect the grass as we'd be stopping every 10 yards. I got out there with a rake and gathered it all up. Well, not quite all...there's a lot, and it's steep, and...

Hope to finish later as it's going to rain tomorrow. Gotta work now. I'm building a new website.

What to do with lemon plants

I have three lemon plants I grew from pips. When it gets warmer I'm going to put them outside as they did well outside last year.

I know growing from pips isn't likely to get me plants that fruit, but I'm strangely attached to them. At the end of the summer though I'm going to have plants that are a bit too big to come back inside. I don't have any kind of greenhouse but am contemplating constructing something specially for for my lemon trees (I'm optimistic). What do lemons like in the winter (apart from a sunny spot in my house). I'm in Somerset.

Does anyone else have a strange obsession with one type of plant? Oranges and tangerines don't do it - it has to be lemons. I can't cut open a lemon without wanting to save all the pips and plant them.

Weird cavity wall flower bed problem

Thanks Bob. Soil isn't anything I've ever wanted to buy and had no idea where to get it. I'll investigate the local DIY centres and building suppplies. I couldn't tell good from bad MP, but the place I just bought some has it cheap, and it has a Which award from 2012 stamped on it - so I guess it has some merit.
