20ft screen/conifer ideas please

Posted: 09/04/2013 at 20:36

Hi Gold1locks and Maria, the one I'm referring to is in West Sussex so the weather experts would probably say it is warmer down here but being a cold mortal I never think it is.   I don't know the variety but always think the leaves are attractive

20ft screen/conifer ideas please

Was just reading another thread and pittosporum was mentioned.  My son has a massive one in his garden but I do know they come in lots of sizes.  If you could wait, and you live near a Wyevale Garden Centre, come the autumn/winter they have many trees/shrubs at half price but I often see Lidle, Asda and Morrisons mentioned on here as selling a good variety of cheap trees and shrubs.

What has happened???

Hi blackest, I endorse everything you have said.

I think macks-boy has been treated very badly both by some people on this site, who have been so pratonising,  and certainly by T&M.  macks-boy has spent money in good faith and still not received goods in return.  That would make me angry also.

Morrisions

I thought I had found a bargain in Morrisons last year with trays of really cheap trailing geraniums.  However, inspite of being in the greenhouse, they never grew and when I inspected them they were just cuttings with no roots.  Coupled with the dreadful summer they never did grow more than 3/4 inches so were a waste of money.  Recently a friend told me about the dahlia tubers there and, forever in search of a bargain, I made a trip to buy some and they are progressing well.

Is it worth having a garden professionally designed?

Thank you sotongeoff for pointing that 'touting for business' post.  If I had the money I would definitely have my garden redesigned but certainly not in the way those pictures show with all that hard structured landscaping.  Looks like electricians and builders did more than a gardener.

Hi LeadFarmer, I'm interested to know what the large plant is in your original group of pictures - No, 6, in an oblong green container.  Is it a grass with a climber behind or just one plant?  Also what direction is it facing?  Lovely pictures of your garden, you must be very proud to achieve such lovely results.

Hi paddy, the drawback about putting a question into the search box (cloggerhead) is that it eliminates the new people to the site  who also have knowledge of the problem and have not yet had the opportunity to comment on it.  By all means use the search box but also 'pick the brains' of other wonderful new knowledgeable contributors.  I am definitely not putting myself in the last sentence as I am relatively new to gardening but have learnt more from this site than I ever thought possible.  My problem is that it is completely addictive and the ironing piles up!

good evening ThaiGer, many thanks for all that extra information.  I started taking cuttings a couple of years ago but am now enjoying experimenting with seeds.  Only time will tell if I have been any good at it.  However, in a couple of weeks we are having a massive conifer hedge removed so am keen to get as many climbing plants in the ground as possible.  The verge outside the garden also belongs to us so I will be planting both inside and outside the fence.  Should be fun and I'm hoping for a brilliant summer.
