climbing plants

Posted: 16/12/2012 at 12:52

To the side of my garage door (facing south-west) I have ivy growing from a small patch of earth up a trellis fixed to a brick wall.  I now want a change so the ivy has to go and have thought of having a hardy evergreen clematis in a pot.  Are there are problems with growing clematis in a pot and can anyone recommend suitable species?  I like all colours and  also, are there any alternative evergreen plants which can be grown in pots.  The plant needs to go to 6/7foot.  I really am a fair weather gardener and manage to ignore the garden in winter so would like something which flowers in summer.

My first effort

Congratulations Sinevegas, you must be very pleased with the results of your efforts and I'm most impressed.  It took me many attemps before I got to your level of success.

My Garden 2012

Hi Jacqui, I can understand you being nervous about opening your garden.  I have organised the first two Open Garden events in my village plus putting my own garden into the first event which seemed like a good idea at the time!  The worry and work involved was enormous but it did enable me to emphasise with the other kind people who were supporting the nominated charities and you do have a fantastic garden to enjoy for the rest of the year.

Your pictures typify the kind of garden I love to visit and I can see how labour intensity it must be.  I wonder if you live in or near West Sussex as would love to visit your Open Garden.  Maybe you could advertise the date and your postcode on this thread nearer the time so interested bloggers could identify your address thro' the NGS brochure and visit.

I have decided to take a back seat next year and not organise another Open Gardens so am really looking forward to having the time to visit other people's gardens.

I did enjoy seeing the phlox by the window as never seem to achieve much with trailing geraniums.  Did you grow the phlox from seed or buy in plugs?  Also, did they last all summer?

hydrangea

thanks sotongeoff, as I was writing about dividing I did wonder if a hydrangea has a single stem anyway, but didn't want to venture down to the dark end of a damp garden to check it out.  I note what you say about cuttings but is it possible to get seedlings from hydrangeas?

A friend has given me a hydrangea, in excellent condition, which she has had in a very large pot for at least 6 years.  However, I do not want to keep it in the pot but want to plant it in my garden.  Should I be planting it now or leave it until the Spring?

Also, is it likely I will be able to divide it and get extra plants?

Talkback: Ash tree dieback

Thanks for that info, maybe it will start performing next year.  I do have two old ash trees at the end of my garden but most of the leaves fell off very early which I thought was due to strong winds and heavy rain - at least I hope that is the reason.

I bought a small Mountain Ash, very cheaply from Morrisons earlier this year, and it hasn't looked particularly healthy or grown very much.  Back in the summer(!!) it did have quite a few ants climbing up it.  I'm wondering if this was an imported tree but maybe I'm just being impatient.

Oh! David K, the silence is overwhelming.  That beautiful pie is making me very hungry.
