Thanks, that's what I thought but good to get a second opinion.

White spider on blackcurrant

I saw a white spider on my blackcurrant bush just now. It looks like this:

I've never in my life seen a white spider before. Anyone know if it poses a problem for my blackcurrant?

When to net blackcurrant bushes against birds?

Thanks everyone. I netted my three bushes this afternoon. What horrible stuff netting is, got quite entangled myself. Well I hope no birds get entangled.

I just noticed a blue tit nibbling at my second year blackcurrant bushes. Just tiny leaves so far. So I examined what it was feeding on and where the leaves join the stem there are what I assume are either leaves to come or the beginnings of blackcurrants.

I was surprised to see this blue tit take an interest, but now I'm wondering, should I be netting the bushes against birds this early? I'd assumed I'd do that when there were fruit.

I am a total beginner with blackcurrants so would appreciate some guidance.

How to prune first year new blackcurrent

Thanks. Yes, I am a bit of a newcomer to pruning so I haven't quite got the 'sense' of it clear. I see what you're saying. So basically leave the bushes as they are this year and only consider pruning at all next year after fruiting, but even then they could be left as they're still young. I think I get it now! Cheers.

I have three blackcurrent bushes in full foliage. They are in their first year in the garden. So I expect my first fruit next year, in their second year of life (what is the reason incidentally for this second year fruiting and not first year?). But I am unsure how to prune them as they've not had any fruit-bearing branches yet. Should I just leave them as they are, or is there a way to prune them to give them the best start next year for their first fruiting?
