Talkback: Growing cucumbers

Posted: 08/08/2015 at 19:12

Just read about yellow cucumbers and it could be cross pollination I've got yellow as well and it has been said that courgettes and squash being too close can cause this and make the cucs yellow and bitter tasting...

Up the allotment today and found 3 yellows ones that were near my courgettes, these are in the polytunnell.

Is my black bamboo flowering?

Posted: 30/05/2015 at 17:51

Yes it looks like a new shoot, just watch how quick it will grow... I have a black bamboo which i bought as a "reduced " item at at garden centre in feb 3 years ago, split it into 2 large pots and it has about 7/8 foot tall spikes.  I feed inJune with lawn food and make sure it doesn't get waterlogged, they don't like wet feet.  It did take a year before it really got going, so keep going it's worth it.

Lack of Apple Blossom

I thought my miniature apple was fairing well with the topsy turvey weather, but it looks like I might have no apples this year   Let me tell you what's happened, back in the March heatwave the blossom buds starting forming nicely but only in the central part of the tree, it was watered well and during the bad spell of weather I made sure I covered it with fleece at night, the flowers appeared but only on about 3 spurs.  My query is that now I found that the flower stems have fallen off. Is this no Pollination or the hailstorms have battered them. My other question is the tree looks healthy plenty of spurs but just with leaves on  - will it begin to form blossom buds now or is that it for this year?   Any help appreciated
