Hello Runnybeak, glad the forum has let you in at last.

Lovely gardens Punkdoc, DD and Fidget. How your bed has grown DD! That looks like Rosa banksiae 'Lutea', I love it, but mine died, they need a sheltered place.

Asparagus

I had one, that I planted, for about 16 years. I didn't harvest the first year, I harvested very lightly the second year. In France, where I live, the crowns are already 2 years old, I have seen 1 year old ones in England so expect that would make a difference. Mine were green asparagus so I didn't earth them up. In France they grow more white asparagus and that has to be earthed up.

You must keep it weeded, by hand is best so that you don't damage the roots. Then you leave them to grow until autumn when you cut them down. Then you can mulch them. They like fertiliser in early spring.

Unfortunately, I got bindweed in mine which was impossible to dig out without damaging the asparagus, so eventually I dug it up. But it gave us loads of spears over the years.

Temporary housing for conservatory plants

Cacti can go on a sunny window sill. Rubber plants can also go on a light window sill but only some sun, not all day. I think it can go outside in summer. Don't know about stephanotis.

Lovely garden.

I recently found an escholtzia growing out of a wall in my garden, it definitely wasn't there a few weeks ago! Photo today.

Another plant I'd wondered about is Lysimachia Firecracker.

How often do you water the garden?

Of course, in winter I don't water and in spring and autumn it depends on the rainfall.

How often do you water the garden?

A lot depends on where you live, the SW gets more rainfall than the East. Also the sort of plants you have and the type of soil, whether it's well drained or holds onto water.

I live in SW France where it can get very hot and dry, so I water flower beds every week or two and the vegetable garden, which is well drained, shallow soil on rock, every 2 - 3 days. I water the plants in pots every other day in summer I always give a good soak, little and often means the water doesn't get down to the roots. I have soaker hoses in the long thin flower beds and I use a sprinkler for the others.

Sometimes there is a water ban, but just here I'm lucky. I ring the local water board and there is usually plenty because of the rocks, caves and underground rivers.
