Fairly inexperienced but the plants I really love so far are: Peony's, poppies -oriental and standard, lavender, hostas, hellebores, magnolia, roses, Japanese annenomies, aliums and agapanthus!

Sprouting Dahlia Tubers

Thanks Dave & Cris. Some great info on dahlias on the site as you said Dave, and having read a few of the articles etc, I've pinched out the growing tips on all the sprouts to encourage bushyness, but there's nothing that tells me if cutting off the leggy shoots will mean no further shoots from the eye, I don't want a leggy sad looking dahlia in the garden but it's better than no dahlia at all!

Sprouting Dahlia Tubers

Can anyone offer advice? I started my Dahlia tubers (some grown from seed last year and some bought as tubers this year) into growth last month and I'm going to try and take some cuttings from the stubby shoots. However my three Arabian Night tubers have put on too much leggy growth, up to 16 inches, Should I cut these tall shoots off? If I do can I use the tips to propergate as I would shorter sprouts? Finally should I be cutting sprouts off with a small part of the tuber attached as some web sites suggest or will that stop the tuber forming new sprouts from the eye. Many thanks.

When to plant out rhubarb?

Just seen the last two replies, many thanks Italophil and Frank, I've just taken on a half plot allotment so I'll follow your advice and plant them there now (once I've cleared the weeds!) with plenty of organic matter added to the soil, not much shade available though, maybe I'll plant one in the garden in a semi shaded spot and see which grows better.

Many thanks, I'll probably try two in the autumn and two in the spring and hope I have better luck than I have with rhubarb in the past!

I've grown four rhubarb plants from seed that I started this spring, I now have four strapping plants in 2 litre containers in the greenhouse. Does anyone know when would be the best time to put these in the ground?

Gardeners World - not back for 4 weeks!

Surely GW could have been shown in an earlier or later time slot, the vast majority of people have the facility to record a programme even if they can't physically be there to watch the transmission. I was incredulous when Monty Don announced a 4 week hiatus, I have no interest in sport and as a novice gardener need all the help I can get from the one gardening programme the BBC deign to show!
