For a list of plants that bumble bees like search for bumble bee conservatioN (can't remember the exact name of the web site).

As someone has already said, the key is getting something in flower all year (crocus early on through to asters later perhaps).

Golden rod - now the rain has stopped I counted approximately 200 insects - mainly honey bees - at one time this afternoon on a patch of Golden rod approx 3 x 1 feet. Not, perhaps, the prettiest plant going but pretty much maintenance free and good at tbhis time of year.

Also attracting the bees today in my garden is buddleia, majoram, fennel and some of the smaller (very invasive) sunflowers which are just starting to open.

Is it ever going to STOP!!!!

New potatoes here have done okay, just picked our first lot of peas which were lovely but eveything else has been pretty much a failure. Broad bean plants about half the size they normally are, onions pretty much the same size as when planted (although for some reason the garlic is growing okay), spring onions eaten (by slugs?) and carrots failed to germinate at all!! Pretty depressing year to be growing veg.

And it's raining again now....

Unfortunately there just aren't that many butterfiles about anymore nd with the cold, damp start to summer there are not likely to be but don't let that put you off gardening with insects in mind as the more food sources they have the more chance there is of the few that are around surviving.
