Help ID these plants, please

Posted: 02/04/2014 at 21:24

Thanks all!

nutcutlet - you are right about the weed comment. i actually like most of the plants in my garden, even the "weedy" ones. I'm just worried about invasive plants that should be controlled. For example, the Lamium plant is starting to take over!

Ryan Lloyd - do you think it could be an Arum Lilly? I really like this plant, but someone said it could be very poisonous and I have dogs and a toddler.

Hi all,

Now that things are starting to bloom I'm wondering if some more of the plants in my new garden are weeds or not. Can you help ID the below? Thanks!

1. This one is pretty, but it's encroaching on some other plants.

 2. This one is taking over my beds, so I am thinking it's a weed?

 3. Am looking mainly for an ID on the large-leaved plant in the middle please.

 4. This popped up near the conservatory wall a couple weeks ago.

Thanks everyone - that was super quick and there is no way I would have been able to work that out myself! You are the best!

Hi all,

I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather. Let's hope it continues.

I am in a new garden this spring and there are some weird and wonderful plants around that I am not familiar with (some I think might actually be weeds, but not sure).

Can you help? Photos are below.

1) I was about to pull this out, because I think it's a weed -but want to double check!

2) Again, possible weed?

3) Not sure about this one

4) This is a fairly small plant sprouting up near a west-facing border

5) This plant has popped up ALL OVER the garden, so hopefully it's a nice one.

Thanks Flowerchild. So it's not actually a climbing plant? Wow - the previous owner of this house did a good job to train it onto the wall then. No wonder it's trying to grow outward.

Unfortunately the plant is not in a container, but it's in the most sheltered part of the garden, so fingers crossed it will last through the winter.

Hi everyone.

There is a vine in my new garden that has one last flower on it! I thought I would see if you lovely people could identify it for me and, if you know what it is, can you advise me if I can prune it back this time of year? It is starting to grow over the living room window sill. Here is a photo:

Yes I suppose you are right. My little boy will need to learn about prickly plants at some point, might as well start him young.

Would I be okay to chop down some of the taller parts of the plant right now or should I wait until early spring?

Hi everyone. Sorry for the delay in posting a photo...here it is. After some googling I think it is probably Rosa Rugosa. (thanks to, landgirl100 and nutcutlet) It sounds like a really nice shrub. I'm just worried about my 1 year old hurting himself running around in the front garden. It would be such a shame to chop down something like this though. I need to think long and hard about it.

Thanks again for being such a huge help again. I have moved into a house with a stacked garden, of which I only know a handful of the plants. So no doubt you will be hearing from me again as spring comes.

Hi everyone, You have helped me out before so hopefully you can help again. I just moved to a new house with lots of lovely plants. However the front border is filled to the brim with these lanky prickly plants with large round red berries. The berries almost look like mini tomatoes, and the fine prickles on the branches are so sharp! I think I will cut them all down but want to know what they are first. Any ideas? Please help!
