Blackfly on broad beans

Hi Artjak - yes I'm in Hampshire! I always put my beans in polytunnels if that helps at all. This year however rather than my usual autumn sowing, because my mum was ill I didn't get mine in until January and I am still waiting for them to show I pinch out the top leaves as soon as the first beans start to show at the bottom - don't pinch out when the first flowers appear or you will have no beans!

Try an autumn sowing - Aquadulcia Claudia is a good one. Plants mature before the blackfly really kicks in. I get a far better crop from them than my spring sowings.

We recorded it this morning and just watched it - we got the letter F! Fuchsias, fencing, ferns etc. We wondered about E - OH is just off checking if we missed something? I loved the ferns bit

Maybe Monty didn't get too technical with the onion grower because his french isn't up to more than the basics? I like Monty's approach and manner and am enjoying the programmes and particularly liked the potager de roi. The ornamental potager where none of the food gets eaten is in my opinion utterly disgraceful...

Ah Bob you reminded me! I still have a row of parsniip (twisted and stunted probably), loads of chillies and garlic from last years sowing. And the parsley in the ground is very good - ever since Monty said it was a root veg I have been planting in the ground rather that in pots and he is so right - when I dig them up in spring to put the new plants in the roots are as good as I wished my parsnips were ! And figrat I still have chard too which I had forgotten about cos I've not picked any for a few weeks now so overall not bad!
