Laurel plants

Posted: 15/01/2013 at 19:36

Hi Tracy

We have a gi-normorous laurel hedge at the bottom of the lawn but it has been there for yonks so I cannot advise on anything! However googling 'planting a laurel hedge' gives loads of hits, some of which might help. I'm sure some of the more experienced posters will help. You say a faster growing plant could be used so what exactly do you want to achieve?

Sorry - 'Legend' does not answer your precise question

I grew Sungold for the first time last year - unbelievably sweet and will grow again this year  (and I always grow Gardeners Delight whatever). I haven't yet settled on a 'normal' one. I'm experimenting too and would welcome suggestions. Got a packect of Legend for 10p - meant to be 'blight resistant' but don't know about that  - it does have RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Whats your plans for the garden this year?

Oh so many things! I want to create a 'secret garden'. I have the space in mind and lots of 'hard landscaping/possibile architectural' things but I am a bit lacking on the design/creative side . Growing fruit and veg is my real passion so I also want to do a lot more with flowers  , Janet

Hi Shazza. I'm interested in the answer to this to as my corkscrew hazel similarly grown in a pot also has next to no catkins this year. Fingers crossed it's not terminal.

I have a Cotoneaster Waterii  and at over 20 years old is now at what must be it's maximum height of about 3.5 metres. Easy to keep pruned and in shape. I use its berries most years to augment the Xmas holly decorations when they have no berries of their own!

Cucumber how to grow

Posted: 30/12/2012 at 18:45

Jason, for the last 2 years I have grown Passandra in a greenhouse. I grow three plants and they are hugely prolific - fortunately we love cucumbers!

http://www.dobies.co.uk/Garden/Vegetables/What+Veg+to+Plant+in/February+Veg+Planting/Cucumber+Passandra+F1+Seeds_434876.htm

After germinating in pots I plant them into the greenhouse bed about 18" apart. They grow tall so need supporting with canes and tying in. I use 12" lengths of pipe (about 30mm diameter?) sunk down towards the roots for watering as cucumbers don't like having their stems wetted. Outdoors I grew marketmore for the first time. It was a later producing crop, not hugely abundant but satisfying considering the weather we had.

What did you grow this year?
