Pinching out Antirrinhums (Snap dragons)

Posted: 28/04/2013 at 12:15

I've got a few of the above and want to make them 'bush out'.

Can I pinch out the growing tip ?  and if so how big should it be when I do it ?

A blue tinge usually indicates they have been cold ... it has been a tad cold lately !

As the lazy gardner says ... stop fretting they'll soon pick up !

Totally agree about growing your own varieties ... I'm currently trying 'Black Russian' to see how they taste !

Steep slope gardening

Hi Leonette,

The best way to do it is to 'terrace' it.  I'd suggest that you get a gardner in to do it for you as it involves a considerable amount of manual work in creating the terraces.  In this way you end up with a series of level beds at various heights (deopending on the height of the slope) which you can fill with plants.   Maybe best to get a landscape gardner in to advise and quote.

If you don't take this approach you'll be limited in the type of plants which can be grown on sandy soil,  together with a somewhat intemperate climate !

Sorry to be a killjoy !

Aches and pains

I take Fish Oil tablets (2 a day) ... it has cleared up the sore knees I always had.

You need to take it for a month before the effects are felt !

I think the compost was too dry if anything !

Compost was last years

Will try and build the lightbox to help.

Well,  I have a disaster on my hands ,   my 'leggy' antirrinhums have collapsed.  I conducted a forensic examination on some of them and found that the root development on them was not very good ie.  About a qusrter of an inch of root and 1 inch of stalk.

I did not use seed compost ... could this be the problem ?

Ground elder in compost bin

Once you've dug it over try putting some plastic over the ground to kill off things due to lack of light.

Also,  in the past I've 'painted' the ground elder leaves with a systemic weedkiller .. this kills a lot of it after a few months .   The trouble is it does come back as once its there its there for good !

Have just been browsing my seedlings with my electron microscope and have spotted the beginning of the true leaves !

Yippeee !!!!

Will keep the faith for another few days before I prick them out ... who knows more may appear !

Soil Problem

I'd gues either weed killer / chemicals in the bed or shade / dry.

Why not put some shade loving plants in the bed ?
