holly bush

Thank you. I'll give it a try  and see what happens.  It would be a shame if I lost it trying to move it, but it can't stay where it is anymore.

Hi does anybody know how big the roots are on a holly bush/tree?  ie do they grow down into the soil or spread out? I have an overgrown bush which I would like to attempt to move.  Assuming i don't get prickled to death by its leaves, how big is the root ball likely to be? The main trunk is about 8cm diameter.

Compacted Soil

Thank you Rosie. I had already thought of just putting  some more top soil down, but then thought I might just be adding to the problem.  Will get back out there this afternoon for some more backbreaking work!

Compacted Soil

I have been doing some hardcore gardening today, clearing back some overgrown shrubs/trees, etc and when I have tried to dig over the soil which was under these bushes, it is very hard and compacted and riddled with roots, etc.  What is the easiest way of digging through this? I tried with a fork, but it was nigh on impossible and I nearly snapped it!!!  Is there an easier way, or do I have to carry on the way I have been?

Thank you for your advice - wish me luck getting rid of the scale - I think I may need it!!

Rhododendron Mould?

Thanks for your reply - I hope this spray is cheap as I have several of these bushes, all are infected and most are about 9' high and are infected all over!  I had a look and they do have white scaley patches on them, so I'm guessing you're right with your diagnosis.  I'm wondering if chopping them right back might be an option and spraying what's left!  They are a bit overgrown at the moment after all - more suited to a stately home than  my semi-detatched back garden!

Rhododendron Mould?

Hi, I noticed while gardening today that all my rhododendron bushes are covered in black stuff on the leaves.  It looks like it would wash off, or maybe mould or polution (!) even though we don't live in a heavily poluted area!!!  I have a feeling that it is some sort of disease, but have no idea what and don't know what to do about it.  Virtually all of the entire bush is coveredand I have several with the same problem and as they are mature bushes, that is a lot of infected leaves!  Before I start chopping them down, which will leave massive gaping holes in my garden, can anybody tell me what it may be and how to tackle it.  Your help would be much appreciated!  Thank you x
