Talkback: How to lift and store dahlias

Posted: 08/09/2013 at 07:25

I thought you waited untill the frost has killed of the folige and then dig them up turn them upside down for a week or two and then store them in a cool dark place in a brown bag or straw.

turning upside down to let the water drain out so they don't root

SOS Lupins look like the are dying

Posted: 08/09/2013 at 07:19

I have sown some lupins about five weeks ago and all is well or should i say all was well until about a week ago when I noticed they were turning light green and now some are dying off.

I have no mound on them. So I was just wondering if it’s too cold for the young seedlings at night they are or I thought they were sheltered from the wind and are not sat in hot sun in the day.

I have some peppers (seedlings) in the same location, these where just a test to see if my own collected seeds from a orange pepper would germinate and guess what everyone germinated these seedlings are in really good health so what is killing my Lupins ??

I just wish I could move the kid's bikes out and have lighting.

May be one day I will have a go at running a cable in from the garage.

yes fidget you are right I know there is a area behind the rockery that is like a cave/den for them as I used to cut the grass there but now it stops growing as it's too dark between the rockery and the conifers ( in the corner)

I think for next year I will just throw wild flower seeds at the garden then and just leave it alone and maybe the foxes will come back But in saying that we never have any cats in the garden back or front back because of the dogs and maybe the front because of foxes ??

I have brambles growing in that part or the garden would you cut them back or just leave

Dove not been in that part of the garden for years I only cut the grass.

But new pacemaker has given me a new lease on life (no stopping me now) in fact I've not stood still since July. I've tried to spend two to three hours in the garden every day since my operation

No hedgehogs spotted but I think I had foxes living in there a year or two ago as I noticed that smell you get with Foxes

I paid last year for the hedge to be cut and I think it scared them off I remembering one year seeing a fox sunning himself on top of my garden shed from a bed room window

Tip's and trick's of the trade.

Good one Stacey I bought some good plants this year from Supermarkets as well

As I was really late this year getting into my garden because of a new pacemaker all my bedding plants where end of the line plants.

in fact I still have a lot off colour in my garden as a result of this. Most of my plants in resonant years have been over by now. I even pick up two hanging baskets for a £7.50 from homebase reduced from £17.50 each these are still going strong (unheard of for me).
