Gravel on the greenhouse floor??

Posted: 18/01/2014 at 18:10

KEF I'm on a mission next week to lay my GH base but I'm having soil beds and not concreting the hole base But on one side I may lay some slabs for Cucumbers and Peppers. On GW one of the last one's of 2013 Monty said to add plastic to create a different climate if you do as you say add gravel to growbag trays and grow your cucumbers in the grow bags would you still add the plastic

No compost reviews at B&Q

Thank you Welshonion I did under stand that

I shall hopefully have my own compost next year But these B&Q, Asda's and Tesco compost in my opinion have to much lumps of twigs and not really of a good quality

I will be sticking to grow wise this year and AB general compost

I like john innings for it's soil partials and well rotted compost  a really good balance

That a good price I pay £3.50 for 20Lt of seed and cutting Compost

This brand on the farm yard Manure was much darker than the AB FYM but we will see how it performs this year as I added one brand to one side on my flower bed and the other brand to the other side of the bed

I shall be adding perlite to my seed compost

I'm sorry but I'm really new to gardening but I really think you get what you pay for I only use John Innings and AB's compost but my local GC has a brand call grow wise witch is JI and very good. I have bought the expand and grow this year for my baskets as It was on offer I only buy when compost is on offer.

I must admit I did buy tesco's compost one year and it was rubbish but I would only use it now to bulk up a big pot and mix it with top soil

Thank you so so much Chicky I've got big fingers and struggle so much with pricking out, I would say I lose 40% of my seedlings as I'm to heavy handed also I have come to the conclusion I compact the compost to much. this is why I have gone for seed plug trays this year as to just seed trays.

Thank you Panda

I'm not sure I will use all on them yet. But hay they can always go on the compost heap. I'm a little but confused about potting seedlings would some one help me.

do you

sow in plug trays and then transfer to

paper pots then

3" pots then plant out to their finial position or

5/7" pots then

plant out to their finial position In the past I've bought flowers in the larger plug pot the garden centers use and plant into there Finial position but it's always knocked the growing back three to four weeks

silly question time

I've been busy making news paper pot for a week or two. Ive made nearly four hundred with more to make on the cards. But while I was making them I suddenly thought what is the best way to water them. I have made them and placed them in seed trays.

I was going to place the seed trays onto a watering mat in side a grow bag tray and water from above. BUT would it be better to place the pots onto the watering mat in side the grow bag tray. while I'm worried about the paper breaking down im also worried about the pots and mould

Advice is clearly needed
