anybody have any spare top soil near chester?

Posted: 12/04/2014 at 18:38

Hi all,I am wondering if anyone has spare(free) top soil in the area as I am creating a secret raised garden for my little girls?

I am hoping that my admiration for nature and gardening can pass on to my children.

I am new to this thread but here is my decking and part of my garden in spring.

It looks better in the flesh,it's difficult to take a photo on the kindle.

I have planted some hellebore seedlings down the back of the play house with cow parsley. In summer I am hoping that sweet peas and clematis are all over the house.

I love my pots. Last year the tulips were up in the middle of June! I have crocuses first then lots of tulips with the odd hyacinth. Good old lasagne planting. It pleases my wife every day looking from our kitchen window.

Obelixx I do it when there is fresh growth, where it is nice and bendy.

Is spring or autumn the best time for root cuttings as I have had limited results?

It will carry on,believe me they get big.

I am going to sow some sunflowers and marigolds this weekend with my young girls, hopefully they will get the gardening bug.

I think so fleurisa,I couldn't bring myself to kill it as I love butterflies so much.

I had to dig up one plant as it was smothering everything around it. I have taken a few cuttings over the years. I have an out building that is joined to the house and is pretty warm at this time of year and it gets sunlight in the morning. I cover them with bags and I water and spray them. I remove lower leaves and dip in hormone rooting powder. Then just hope. I am planning on giving these to my daughters school. I have had to trim my cuttings from previous years as they get big quickly. But when you see all the butterflies on them you can't help but love them. Hope this helps.

Trial and error but it is fun.

I have been busy this year dividing hostas and some sedum. I have filled up most of my trays with seed, with varying degrees of success, and the other day I  took some cuttings. Penstemon, scabious, bowles mauve and campanula. I came to water them this morning and a caterpillar had started to eat some and lay eggs. I wouldn't mind but they had bags on tied around with royal mail elastic bands(they drop them everywhere).

What have you been up to?

Buying seeds online/eBay

The good thing about ebay is that you can get unusual seeds at brilliant prices. I have bought lots and actually swapped a few on this website.

I would recommend british only suppliers as foreign ones put the seeds on a boat I think(it takes forever),and include pitiful instructions.

Have a go,most are buy it now. I have just bought some pennisetum seeds. Can't wait to plant them.

Thank you all. Fair douze dove, you know your stuff. I will dig up and put in some agapanthus. It must have gotten there through a mixed perennial seed packet.

Cheers

Dove the stems are square. How odd. Does that confirm what you think it is?
