The marks on your pear tree are unconnected in my opinion. These marks are pear rust.

If you want to find out more about hedgehogs I can recommend a great book I am reading at the moment which dispells a lot of myths and explains alot too.

birds

Hi, birds don't mind what quality your feeders are only that they are kept clean. It is really important to regularly wash them with hot soapy water in order for disease not to build up on them which can cause diseases to spread between birds and across species.

Offer different types of seed and see what comes in - whole sunflower seeds or sunflower hearts are popular with a large range of birds. Peanuts behind mesh (baby birds can choke on whole peanuts) will also bring in different birds - I get woodpeckers on mine.

By offering food in different ways you will also increase the types of birds in your garden  - hanging feeders; bird table; scattering food, scraps, fruit on the ground.

In winter or when the weather is cooler - grated cheese and  fat balls are two other things to try.

Is that a flower bud at the top of the bottom picture Jap3? If it is maybe a photo of it when it opens would help confirm id.

Unfortunately the photo does not enlarge when I click on it and the original is too small for me to see the plant in detail.

Weed or boarder plant

Posted: 11/06/2014 at 19:30

The plant twining itself around the stem is convolulus - weed which strangles other plants and is hard to kill !!

Can't id the other one ( I'm sure someone else will) but it looks like a weed too.
