new job

O Danny boy, the plants, the plants are calling........good luck in your new job and I hope (if the powers that be allow) that you may post some of your displays for us to see.

Front "garden" needs some inspiration!

Ferns do not produce pollen and the geraniums have short flowering period - therefroe produce pollen for a short time with more interest through their foliage.

I'd plant lots of tete a tete narcissi and some low growing tulips like - Little red riding hood now to give a lovely show from Feb/March. An evergreen geranium - Geranium macrorrhizum would offer you low maintenance ground cover with interest throughout the year not leaving any place for cats' calling cards! A few sedums (in sun) dotted through would add height, texture and flowers at a different time of year or as suggested above some ferns(shade).

'Ping' for Niblets

Shrub ID please

Posted: 09/11/2014 at 14:53

There was a thread called 'Callicarpa' where this plant was discussed not very long

ago. I'll 'ping' it to the top of the pile as several people including my self grow this

shrub and you may find your questions already answered on the thread or get  better

answers to your questions from people who grow the shrub on it. Hope this helps

Cutting back neighbours trees/plants

Posted: 09/11/2014 at 11:32

I would talk to your neighbours first. Explain what you would like to do and why. They may be concerned with loss of privacy etc and need reassurance or be grateful that you are willing to do a job for them...They may offer to cut back themselves or give you the go ahead to do whatever you like...but better to speak to them before you take the saw to something as it can not be reattached!!

What kind of fruit trees are they? Cherries need pruned in summer, apples in winter or disease can set into tree in the case of cherries for example.

One of the rules(as I understand it) is whatever overhangs into your property belongs to your neighbours and should be returned to them - I think this could end up causing more issues so I usually dipose of any prunings coming over the fence myself instead of throwing them back over the fence!

Dartford Crossing new system

Thanks for this info and the very useful link Salino. I live in Essex and don't use the crossing regularly but would just expect to roll up and pay at the kiosk....I too have not seen any info of this on bill boards, newspapers etc in my area. Thanks again.

Erigeron karviensis overwintering

Mine stays outside. It is hardy but it is sitting in the wet which would kill it. Mine dies back completely and then comes from the base in spring. You will probably find seedlings popping up everywhere in cracks, gravel etc if it is happy!

I should also add my Callicarpa is 'Profusion'. It is in a clayish soil improved with compost and manure when I can get it. It is in  full sun, fairly sheltered.

Sorry, was too dark when I left for work this morning and losing light when I came home. Some of the photos are with flash due to the poor light. I have never pruned my shrub but I will reduce its height in spring due to the growth spurt it has had this summer!
