Removing Ivy

Posted: 02/05/2014 at 22:27

You will not be able to dig out the roots so you have to treat the plant with a weedkiller that will travel down through the plant to the roots - it will kill the whole plant.

Don't cut down the plant until you can see signs that it is beginning to die (probably several weeks after you apply the weedkiller). If any parts of the ivy start to grow back treat it with Glysophate again. Sometimes you will need to re-treat tough plants like ivy several times in order to kill them off. Follow directions on the packet. Be aware that Glysophate will kill any plant that it touches.

Don't know which ones you want identified - the pink, white and red flowers are all petunias. The spiky plants are probably aloes.

no blossom on my apple tree this year

Posted: 02/05/2014 at 14:47

My apple tree outdid itself with fruit last year and hasn't flowered this year. It is quite common if a tree over does it one year to produce little or no fruit the following year. Maybe the combination of over fruiting and then a good prune has delayed yours for 2 years. If it is producing new growth and seems healthy enough, I would give it a feed and look forward to a good crop next year.

Thanks for the info shirsgw. I'll check them out - hopefully at the weekend. All eggs seem to have hatched and chicks doing well. Definitely lost one and difficult to tell at the moment how many there are!! Mum and Dad both working hard and chicks growing.

shirlsgw - how complicated is it to set it up for others to view your box? What gadgetry do you need?

My blue tits have hatched this morning - 8 so far from 11 eggs and I'd like to share with friends. Thanks.

I agree with barry island, no1 looks like a crab apple (better off in the ground if you have room, it will have exhausted all the goodness in the pot  and will need to be fed  if it remains in the pot - let us know if you are going to leave it i the pot and then we can detail the care needed); no 2 ceanothus

You should be fine if there are already acid loving plants growing well. You have done your research on positioning - they should enjoy the freedom of the soil.
