Compost for sowing seeds

Posted: 20/01/2014 at 17:47

I think very few people make their own seed compost for several reasons - you need to sterilise the soil you need by heating it    e.g.  in a microwave to kill off harmful viruses ..;  normal compost will be full of weed seeds which will germinate when used in a seed growing situation; you can't be sure of the nutrient levels in your soil - seedlings need a soil of low nutrient level.

I usually use a brand from Aldi with good results.

Connecting water butts to a greenhouse

Posted: 17/01/2014 at 18:35

I used a piece of hose from a car radiator to connect mine up - just pushed it on and hooked the jubilee clip (attached) to the existing gutter on green house to hold it in place. As it has a bend in it, any debris that falls in catches in the bend and I can remove it. Having said that - with a lovely new green house... a piece of radiator hose is not going to look great.

Hedgehogs

I am still putting out hedgehog food nightly. My hedgehogs show no sign of hibernating! The bowl is empty each morning.

That's kind Clueless but I now have watched all so far  and have the rest of the series on record to save. I am really enjoying the series and believe it is the best thing the bbc has done for years.

After further research it's episode 2 - the one about the topiary that I have missed. Still can't find where to watch it though!

Thanks for the tip about toptopiary I bought a fan tailed dove frame for my Mum who lives in 'Dove Cottage' for Xmas. Service was great and she is thrilled with the frame.

I've missed an episode of Great Gardens....I think episode 3...and they are not on iplayer anymore, anyone with any idea if it is available anywhere else? Thanks.
