Shrub suggestions

Posted: 18/06/2012 at 21:41

I need a couple of large, attractive shrubs to plant in our lawn. The spot will mostly be in full sun, maximum eventual size about 8' x 8'. Good well drained soil. Would like something that either has a long flowering period or attractive foliage. Country garden. Any suggestions ??

Cucumber stem rot ?

One of my cucumber plants has rot - I think. The plant is about 5 foot high (in the greenhouse) and has been priducing fruit for several weeks now. I noticed yesterday that where one of the leaves meets the main stem, the stem is rotting and white - this is about 3 feet from the ground. The area affected is about an inch in length. I have removed the leaf. Is there anything else I can do ? Cut off the top of the plant ?  Leave it ? Will the other plants get affected too. Although yesterday was lovely and warm in there, today it is only 14c

Strawberries in hanging baskets

The strawberries are in the greenhouse at the moment I'm just not sure that I would remember to go and water them occasionally in the winter, so might put them outside somewhere. Of course, if I try to keep my lettuce going in the winter I would have to go into the greenhouse anyway

Thanks for the replies !! What do you do with the strawberries in the winter ?? Just leave them hanging and water from time to time or do you put the baskets in the garden ??

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a try. I'm happy to buy some more runners next year if it doesn't work ! Only bought 12 runners this year and don't think that I'm going to have enough to make jam The strawberries so far are delicious, so would be good to have some more of the same.

Thanks

I'm growing strawberries in baskets in the greenhouse for the first time. The plants have just started producing runners. Do I cut them off ?? Can I propogate them somehow to give me a few extra plants for next year ??

Thanks

Problems with dwarf beans

Standard compost from The Range - new this year. Most of my veggie seeds planted in the same stuff - everything else is fine and growing well

Thanks for the suggestion. Could be damping off - never experienced it before. The only thing I can think of is that OH keeps his carnivorous plants in a large tray filled with water - quite near my seedlings. Maybe that's the problem ?? Are dwarf beans particularly prone to it ? Otherwise I'm very careful not to overwater. I use bought compost for seedlings. Just waiting for warmer weather before planting out the surviving seedlings. I'll plant a few seeds out as well and hope that they take

Problems with dwarf beans

I'm having problems ths year with dwarf beans. I sowed 30 'Speedy' beans in individual 3" pots (haven't grown Speedy before). All my seeds are raised in a very large, heated garden room that has plenty of light. Of the 30 only 9 germinated. I realised that I hadn't soaked the beans first so I sowed another 15 or so after soaking first. Of the first 9 plants, I have only 1 left !! All the others, at different stages of growth, have died - some after the first couple of leaves appeared and a couple at around 4 inches tall with lots of leaf. Of the second batch of seeds, I have about 7 seedlings which mostly are OK - so far. I've not had problems with any of my other veg seeds. What is going on ? I've grown dwarf beans for years and apart from the odd germination problem, I've never had them die off like this.
