Leeks

Posted: 30/06/2012 at 13:10

Any tips please as I haven't grown leeks before. I bought 20 leeks plants on the market this morning - on a whim I have an empty space in a raised bed where my dwarf beans didn't grow/got eaten (again !). How far apart do I plant them etc ?? The bed already has well-rotted horse manure in it.

Thanks

Shrub suggestions

Bit of a disappointment Garden centre recommended by neighbours, but the stock of shrubs was abysmal and they all needed a good water Had driven 30 miles to get there Went back to our small, local garden centre for lunch and managed to see a Photinia. Definitely consdering this together with a Rhododenron Luteum and a Viburnum Opulus Roseum (which we had here but lost during building work).

Does anyone know the best time of year to plant these ???

Thank you for that suggestion ! We are going to a large garden centre this morning to have a look at some shrubs so I will make sure we look at this Photinia !!

I need a couple of large, attractive shrubs to plant in our lawn. The spot will mostly be in full sun, maximum eventual size about 8' x 8'. Good well drained soil. Would like something that either has a long flowering period or attractive foliage. Country garden. Any suggestions ??

Cucumber stem rot ?

One of my cucumber plants has rot - I think. The plant is about 5 foot high (in the greenhouse) and has been priducing fruit for several weeks now. I noticed yesterday that where one of the leaves meets the main stem, the stem is rotting and white - this is about 3 feet from the ground. The area affected is about an inch in length. I have removed the leaf. Is there anything else I can do ? Cut off the top of the plant ?  Leave it ? Will the other plants get affected too. Although yesterday was lovely and warm in there, today it is only 14c

Strawberries in hanging baskets

The strawberries are in the greenhouse at the moment I'm just not sure that I would remember to go and water them occasionally in the winter, so might put them outside somewhere. Of course, if I try to keep my lettuce going in the winter I would have to go into the greenhouse anyway

Thanks for the replies !! What do you do with the strawberries in the winter ?? Just leave them hanging and water from time to time or do you put the baskets in the garden ??

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a try. I'm happy to buy some more runners next year if it doesn't work ! Only bought 12 runners this year and don't think that I'm going to have enough to make jam The strawberries so far are delicious, so would be good to have some more of the same.

Thanks

I'm growing strawberries in baskets in the greenhouse for the first time. The plants have just started producing runners. Do I cut them off ?? Can I propogate them somehow to give me a few extra plants for next year ??

Thanks
