Update on improvements to forum

Posted: 09/05/2016 at 16:53

Hello everyone,

We had a productive meeting with the technical team today about the improvements we can realistically build and release to the site this week.

Our priority is to resolve those issues that you’re most unhappy with as quickly as possible. So, we’ll have two developers working for two full days on the following fixes:

Spacing / excessive scrolling
We’ll be significantly reducing the amount of blank vertical space in the design, in order to increase the number of thread titles visible on each page. We’ll also tweak the spacing of the quote tool, which many of you are currently finding excessive.

Pagination links
These will take up less vertical space and we’ll add pagination to the top of the page as well as the bottom

Typography
We’ll remove those instances of the Jubilat font that many of you have told us you find difficult to read, and it will no longer be used for thread titles and usernames

Colour scheme
We don’t want to rush into a colour scheme changes this week - it’s important we get it right. So, we propose that we make the changes listed above and monitor the response. If, after a period of ‘getting used to it’ a significant number of users are unhappy with the colours, we’ll look at changing them. If that happens we’ll present you with some options, so you can tell us which you prefer - we won’t just put it live with no warning!

Our hope is that all of the above will significantly improve your experience of the forum while we then work on other improvements:

1) Pinch and zoom on images
2) Edit post function - building this on the new system isn’t a simple job, we’re told, so we’re not rushing into it this week - in the light of recent events, we don’t want to rush-release something that is unstable and doesn’t work properly!
3) Notifications tick box - this will relate to your stated preference in the setting area
4) Notifications - this is currently erratic / unstable, so further time needs to be spent on this

So, that’s the plan!

After the two days of coding, the changes will be prodded, poked and tested to check they’re stable, before being released to the live site. We’ll be going all out for this to happen before the weekend - late Thursday at the earliest, but possibly Friday.

I very much hope that you’ll be happy with the outcome. Please remember that this is a process - we won’t have a perfect forum this week, but it should be considerably easier (and more pleasurable) to use. Further tweaks will quite probably need to be made, but Rome wasn’t built in a day!

As ever, please don’t hesitate to leave your questions, constructive comments and suggestions.

Thank you for bearing with us.

Hazel - Thanks for submitting your Support Details. Yes, we'll certainly be discussing the email notification glitches at the meeting, which we're off to shortly.

KT53 - Thanks, Nora will add that to the list of feedback about excessive scrolling / navigation

Palaisglide - many thanks for this and welcome back! I'm glad there are elements of the design that you like. That's something for us to build on! As per her post, Nora will continue to look for a solution to the issue with the PMs.

Stargaze lily "Sorry Daniel, not moaning but just letting you know" - absolutely, I know you're not moaning. Feedback / comments always welcome!

"The site will remain near enough the same".

It most certainly will not - we've been working incredibly hard over the last year on hundreds of new pieces of content - videos, projects, features, as well as many hundreds of new plant records, a new plant finder and plenty more besides. That content isn't live yet, but it's not too far away.

"the site will remain near enough the same - You've already said that somewhere else."

No I haven't.

Lyn,

I'm sorry you feel that way. I think you're being a bit harsh...

The forum will certainly not remain the same if I have anything to do with it. We're all committed to making as many improvements as we can, in direct response to the detailed feedback we've had. It's not in anyone's interest to have a forum that people are unhappy with - certainly not in ours.

"Its just a case of peoples reactions to the sudden change, they'll all still use the site, and Daniel and the team knows that."

That makes it sound like you think we're insincere in our intention to correct the mistakes, Lyn, and we take the audience for granted. I can tell you quite categorically that couldn't be further from the truth.

We're in the process of making site-wide changes, most of which will go live over the next couple of months. I don't agree with you at all that the site is "awful" or "rubbish" - we work extremely hard to ensure that it's a good as it possibly can be. It's just as frustrating for us when there are technical problems as it is for the people who use this site.

It's entirely up to you whether you continue using the site - I very much hope you do, as real improvements are on the way. But I'd be grateful if you didn't cast aspersions on our sincerity in doing the best we can.

plant pauper -

Hostafan1 - thanks for this. All very reasonable points - I agree with all of them! I really hope we can deal with the most intensely irritating problems this week, before setting to work on those that are just very irritating.
