Growing Sweet Peas 2014/2015

Posted: 01/04/2015 at 09:04

I do get confused sometimes when hearing 'need to harden them off'....but why soften them in the first place?

Yvie - pleased to hear of your success. I haven't made any kind of price comparison, but I do know that buying quality seed increases your chances growing quality plants and I do know that Eagle SPs are second to none.

Edit: I would just say again, protect those young plants from  these cold winds.....I have never lost them to frost, but I have lost them to cold winds.

Hi, Denno.....if you live in the UK and anywhere south Aberdeen, I would suggest they should be their flowering spot by now.

As I keep saying, please offer some protection from these very cold winds.

Cut my gardening teeth on the wisdom & advice of the likes of Percy Thrower, Arthur Billitt, Geoffrey Smith, Clay Jones and Geoff Hamilton.....to which I will be eternally grateful.

I've used Franchi seed for years and would recommend them with confidence.

Fierce biting winds here in the Midlands today, sweet peas really don't like this so try to offer some protection if possible.

How do they know they've been potted on?

The bottom truss tells em!

Many years ago my old friend and presenter of Gardeners' World, the late Arthur Billitt gave me this tip. Prior to presenting Gardeners' World he worked as a research aggri chemist for Boots.

He said they had conducted trials on tomatoes and it was found that the size of the bottom truss was influenced by when the seedlings were potted-on. Tomatoes should be potted-on immediately the first pair of seed leaves have straightened out and for each day's delay in doing this reduced the size of the bottom truss.

Plant them deep with the seed leaves resting on the compost.

I almost know the Colin Firth version of Pride &  Prejudice off by heart and could/do watch it over & over again.....having said that, I do take your point Yvie.

So beautifully casted.....was there ever a Mr Collins, Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine de Bourgh like it?

Courting danger here by singling out one dog. However, (living dangerously is me) I have to say 'Trigger' is one very handsome & intelligent looking  fella.

All so far posted seem to be beautifully groomed & loved.
