I am growing cestrum tomentosum and have been since september and out of everything i have grown its done the best they are quite big in the pots now. I generally prick my seedings when they develop there first set of true leaves (their second set of leaves) and put them in larger cell trays or small pots. Each plant is different as for instance my pansys are in my unheated greenhouse but i am growing my dahlias, marigolds, indoors still as they are not hardy. Someplants grow leggy in heat and other prefer cold so its really a plant by plant thing but theres plenty of information on the net. As for potting on again its a plant by plant thing but generally they will start to look big in the pot and then its time to pot on. I am sure someone will know alot more than me.

That is all very helpful actually, I guessed it must be a plant by plant thing, I was just wondering if I could group any kinds together and treat them the same way, but as i am a learner I guess it will do me good to research each plant properly and learn more about growing from seed.

Thanks again if anyone else has any further advice that would be smashing.

So I guess I am looking for seedling aftercare advice please, will I need to look up aftercare instruction for each individual variety or is there a re-potting rule, I am wondering if some varieties need lots of seedlings keeping together etc...  As I said difficult to put into words, I hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All

This is my first year as a homeowner and we have 2 fairly large gardens to fill with plants.  I was lucky to make the most of a Thompson & Morgan pricing error and get lots of packs of seeds for not much money at all and I have lots of different varieties of fruit, plants, grasses, flowers and veg growing in pots, propagators and our greenhouse.

A lot of the seeds are now starting to poke through the soil but I have a question, it may sound a bit silly and I am not sure how to word it but I do need some advice please so here we go...  I must have 20 different flower varieties, 5 different veg, 4 different fruit and half a dozen different grass varieties planted and growing, is there a general rule of thumb for what to do with seedlings once they reach a certain height or will this differ dramatically from plant to plant?  There were some instructions on the seed packets but not for how to re-pot once seedlings have grown.

To give you an idea of what I have growing:

Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Star' - yellow

Cephalaphora aromatica

Cerastium tomentosum - white

Commelina dianthifolia - blue

Cineraria 'Jester Scarlet' - red

Calceolaria 'Sunset Mixed' - mixed

Layia platygossa 'Tidy Tips' - yellow

Saponaria ocymoides - pink

Pansy 'Singing the Blues' - mixed

Dahlia coccinea 'Species Mixed' - mixed

Lavender 'Hidcote' - purple

Panicum virgatum - green

Liatris scariosa 'Gracious' - white

estuca glauca - green

Marigold 'La Bamba' - orange

 Hi All

I have attached 2 pics each of our front and back gardens of the house we have just moved into. We knocked a lot of walls down, took crazy paving up in the front and ripped bushes and most plants and weeds from back garden out at the end of last summer as we wanted a blank canvas to work from.

We were wondering if you guys could give us some inspiration for either the front or back garden as we will be cracking on with it when the weather improves slightly but please bear in mind I am not working at the mo so we do need to do this on a very small budget.

We will be moving the greenhouse to the very back of the back garden so that the dog can't get at it, which will free up a nice area where the greenhouse was that could be a patio area and the awful brick wall on the right hand side of the garden will be getting knocked down and replaced with fencing to match the back fence.  We have bought some apple trees which will probably be planted in the ground on the left hand side in front of the brick wall. We also have a couple of acers to plant somewhere and I would like to get a couple of smoke trees, I love colourful plants and trees.

The front garden gets the sun all day long so I want to plant lots of smaller fruit bushes and nice smelling things but I just do not know what to do with the mish mash of concrete going on, also the soil is full of weeds, as is the back garden.

I guess I just don't know where to start with it all as it is our first house that we have owned so any advice or help would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance!

How do I take and grow cuttings of Smoke Tree (royal Purple) please?

No-get them outside they do not need greenhouse protection -they are hardy plants-you not want to encourage any early leaf growth make keeping them cosy.

They will be fine

Brilliant thanks a lot.

Hi All

I got my apple trees potted in some lovely soil and they seem to be doing great.  My worry now is the forecast for the next few weeks in Teesside looks to have lots of freezing temperatures overnight, would people recommend that I put them in the greenhouse for a few weeks until this period has passed?  Or should I ideally be moving them in and out of the greenhouse as and when it is freezing?

Many thanks peeps.

Hi thanks for the replies, I will pot them up first thing tomorrow and only put them in greenhouse if snow and frost returns and bring them back out afterwards, I've got some really good compost. As for the pollination I have actually received 1 cox orange pippin and 1 laxtons superb tree and it seems these will pollinate each other, which is great!

Any other tips would be very much appreciated.

I should add that I do have a greenhouse if they can be kept in there until they can be planted in the garden?

Hi all I just received 2 bare root cox apple trees that are a few years old in the post today and I was wondering whether I can temporarily plant these In very large pots for a couple of months until my currently muddy-bog of a garden is finished and we have decided where to plant the trees? We already have 2 very large wooden planters, would they be ok? Any help would be brilliant, let me know if you need more info.
