Looking for some help with a couple of landscape problems please.

My first question is about the log flooring as seen above.  I can get hold of some nice logs to replicate this effect in my front garden instead of boring paving but i need to know the best and cheapest way to protect the wood from the elements so it will last for many years please?

my second question is regarding our garden gate, we installed a new gate last year and painted it with one coat stain and varnish, it is currently an oak colour but because we have now installed a nice new white picket fence we want to paint the gate white.  We have white undercoat and dulux gloss weathershield, will i actually need to undercoat or just use the gloss weathershield? Also will surface need to be sanded? The oak finish is actually still pretty perfect so can i just gloss straight on top?

Any help on these problems would be brilliant thanks Chaps!

I would like some evergreen box plant type plants to semi surround my patio area, but I only want something low maintenance and most importantly that only grow to around a foot high max. Are there any specific dwarf type varieties of box buxus plants or similar plants that you can recommend please? If you could give me the full names or nicknames for the variety that would be really helpful So I can shop around. Thanks!

PS. apologies for all the dashes in the Title, I have no idea as to why this happened!

Where are the seeds located on a poached egg plant?

Hi all

I was just looking at my potted poached egg plants flowers and they all seem to be dying off a little, losing their flowers.  I would like to collect some seeds to plant and grow next year but i am unsure where the seeds are, are they the petals? Or are they the 4 small ball things that are left in the flower head once the petals have dropped? Or... Are they actually inside these 4 ball thingies? Any help would be great thanks!

Help with my Katsura tree seedlings please??

Hi all, I am growing Katsura Trees, as you can see in the picture the seedlings are just coming through but I am confused as to why there are leafy seedlings and grass-like seedlings, which are the correct Katsura seedlings please? I am guessing its the grassy ones as these are coming through more but i am slightly confused, can anyone advise please?

Can i grow new poached egg plants next year from these seeds??

Hi there all, i made a mistake and got 2 of my plants mixed up, these seeds are actually from a Tidy Tips, these grow pretty easily so I reckon these seeds will grow fine next year, and that probably explains why there is a bit of yellow left on them.

What are these growing at the base of my fern please??

Ahh amateur mistake on my part, i will throw the new plants/weeds straight out and repot the fern, removing the other plants from the base.

thanks very much for the tips guys, love this forum, so helpful.

Thanks ChrissieB i will certainly try and plant some in Autumn, see what happens. Do you have any tips for drying the seeds? Do I Just leave on windowsill or in greenhouse for a week or 2?

And Nutcutlet, the seeds were just about to drop from the heads, some had already half dropped, so i guess they probably just need drying out. I do have another couple of poached egg plants that are still in full bloom, i will try and leave these to the very last minute before harvesting seeds but they seem to fall quite soon after flower dies.

thanks for taking the time to reply chaps!

 Hi all

please see the above pics of my fern, I am not sure of the variety but I believe it is Ostrich \ shuttlecock type.  There are lots of shoots at the base of the fern, some of which i have potted up seperately as pictured, i am just wondering if these will grow into ferns themselves? I would love it if they did as i would like another half dozen ferns for the garden.

Many thanks in advance if you can offer any advice!
