Mulching

Posted: 06/12/2014 at 00:53

I use leaf mold to mulch my beds,it is well composted .I was wondering what is grit exactly.I was watching carol Klein on gardeners world and when she sets seeds of astrantia out to germinate she used grit to cover them,I am guessing they need light and the cold to germinate.I am in u.s and have not heard that term ,is it vermiculite?I dont think I am on the right site, but thought someone might know .I do want to winter sow a few differt seeds and would like to put them out in Jan.Thanks

Primula - growing from seed

Posted: 02/12/2014 at 19:27

I have just ordered seeds from seedaholic.com I ordered primula and dierama pulcherrium also geranium phaeum samobor.I am going to start all of these by the winter sowing method, in gallon milk jugs left out all winter to make little greenhouses, since i do not have a cold frame.Has any one grown dierama from seed ,if so can you let me know what to expect ,and if it grows and forms corms can you lift them to store for the next season. This will be my garden experiment for this coming season

New nieghbours, new fence and eye-saws

I know how you feel.the house next to me was sold 6 months ago. my new neighbors have plowed every shrub and taken down almost every tree. I never saw into any yards til now,I can see clear through 2 backyards I live on long island in the u.s,I guess this happens everywhere,I would put up some lattice fencing and you will have some privacy until you plant.

Have you sown any seeds yet this year?
