Spring Bulbs not flowering

Posted: 10/02/2015 at 16:23

As a point of interest I decided to enhance my borders with some fresh daffs, various, . planted last autumn.  The daffs that were already there are now in bud and not far from blooming, the new ones are only just starting to show. I assume from this that they take a year o5 so to establish, so be patient with last autumn plantings.

To compost or not to compost

Have two large compost bins, which naturally seem to attract lots of worms, amongst other insects which all help to break down the compost.

How big are vine weevil grubs?

Definately sounds like the dreaded vine weevil .  As the various treatments are quite expensive you might find it cheaper, and easily done , if the pots are accessible to empty them out , dispose of the old compost and its little visitors, wash the roots gently and repot in fresh compost . I find this works well with polyanthus which seem to feature highly on the vine weevil menu.

Try a local independant builders merchant ,if you have one nearby  I found just what you are looking for in my nearest. I live in N wilts but would think they are avaiable elsewhere.

Help

I agree with Phillipa, I grow garlic in containers using a mix of multi purpose compost and Sharp sand  about 20% sand , keep them fairly well spaced and weed free ,  feed with a liqiud feriliser every 3 weeks or so once they are well established and growing well.

Good luck

I tend to use a mixture of both quite successfully in my bags, watch out for slugs and other nasties though. I also put in some gromore or similar pellets .

I would suggest mixing it 50/50 with multi compost if its got clay add some sharp sand to assist drainage.
