water butt tap not working

Posted: 30/08/2017 at 14:13

Oh crikey, I had forgotten all about this thread. Thanks Chrisl for resurrecting it. I wonder if in the two and a half years it has been fixed or are they still discussing whether to syphon or not?

Our jack Timmy came from www.jackrussellterrierrescueuk.org if you are interested mostyn.

They haven't got kennels, all their dogs are in foster homes so they get to know what sort of nature they have. They've got puppies or mature dogs.

is this unusual?

I've had dozens of flowers on that plant but this is the first one to open like this. Many thanks.

I have an 18yr old cat and a lively Jack Russell. Both enjoy the garden. Dustybin (found dumped in a black sack as a kitten) likes to help with the propagation of seeds by warming up the soil for me!

I noticed this singe white petal on my red dahlia today and wondered why this has happened. All the other flowers are all red.

Dahlia no show - did I do something wrong?

Posted: 05/07/2017 at 18:53

I've never grown Dahlias before this year, so I bought a mixed bag from a value shop, to see how I got on. Only 9 of the 11 tubers have grown, and they don't look like the picture on the bag. But very pretty none the less. I had terrible trouble as soon as the leaves emerged. Blasted  slugs munched every day. I resorted to putting a ring of animal hair (from the hoover) around each stem and it seemed to stop them in their tracks. If I hadn't done that I doubt I would have had any plants at all.

I have 2 mystery plants that have appeared this summer. I've been waiting to see what sort of flower they produce to help with identifying them but they are getting bigger but still no flowers.

The large heart shaped leaf has a fine soft down on front, back and stem. It has appeared near the wild bird seed feeder, so I wonder if it is something from there.

The other one has appeared by my front door and is fragrant when you touch the leaves.

I hope the photos can help.

Mini roses being eaten

Posted: 05/07/2017 at 18:04

Can anyone advise me as the tiny rose buds are being eaten from the base, usually by a small green caterpillar making a hole in the calyx. Some of the clusters of buds are being stuck together with a silk web type stuff. I couldn't see what was doing this until I pulled a bud off today and a little green head popped out! I have sprayed with Provado now but was not sure if this will be effective. Any help will be gratefully received.

Forgot to say  they were Fryers roses.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I picked up a brochure from Hampton Court FS and ordered some rose bushes from them. A huge selection to choose from and all are doing well. I chose Sheilas perfume, Amber sweet dreams, and Mamma Mia..

Worth having a look at their website.
