Lily of the valley

Posted: 03/02/2015 at 11:39

I want lily of the valley in my garden but I've never managed to keep them. Each time I plant they just disappear. Maybe the clay soil doesn't suit. I've tried in pots as well, but just get a few leaves and nothing else. Are they tricky? I thought they are a bit weed-like , as my grandmother had them running all over her flower beds.

what type of bush is this?

My photinia has flower buds on now and some look white and fat enough to open soon. Much earlier than last year.

plant / weed id please

The grey one looks like my stachys 'Big Ears' Very large furry leaves, silky to the touch.  Cow parsley is the green one I think.

Yes the flowers are dendrobium shape, but I've never seen anything so small before. Even the biggest flower is less than an inch across, and so perfect in detail. Amazing!

Thank you all for your input.

Yes I've grown phalaenopsis ones for years, and have 2 in bud right now that are several years old. But as this was a different flower I thought it may need different conditions. Thanks anyway.

Birds at the tips of my fingers - almost!

I put half a coconut shell out at Xmas, and not had a single bird peck at it yet. I  wish I'd eaten the lot instead of just half! So you are lucky they like yours, unless it's filled with special bird food.

I bought this orchid at the supermarket only £5. Couldn't resist, but no specific instructions on the label, so I don't know what type it is. The flowers are so tiny and delicate and I'd hate to lose it. Hope someone here can advise me.

This is a regular visitor to my garden. Not sure but think it's an albino dunnock. Sorry I don't know how to turn them round on here.

So many of my list have already been mentioned, but my top  5 are :-

Slugs

Lily Bugs

Drivers who don't indicate! grrrr!!!!

Smokers

Badly behaved children AND their parents! I was a single Mum of 4, and I swear that none of mine behaved like so many do now. Sadly the problem gets passed on down the generations.

Thanks for a very entertaining post.

I was given a dozen of these when I moved here in 1971 and although lots of them have been munched or dug up accidently I still have about 4 that bloom vigorously every year with the most amazing fragrance. Not bad going is it? They remind me of the lovely lady who gave them to me, sadly no longer with us.
