Had this given to me 4 years ago with a beautiful flower on it. Have nurtured it since in a pot but never another bloom. From the leaves it looks as if it has made several small plants instead of one big bunch of leaves together. What should I do with it?

Day Lily bud problem

Yes that's exactly what it looks like. I'll remove all problem flowers and hope to catch it in time. Thank you

My Viburnums don't suffer with those beetles either. Perhaps they haven't discovered some plants yet!

Some of my day lilies have flower buds that don't open and they just look fat and rounded, with a strange coloration. Any ideas what it is?

Yes I would agree. I've got some coming up away from the original plant. Maybe from the roots of self set from the berries.

Talkback: Garden pests

I know how frustrating it seems when things get eaten. Half my runner plants have disappeared. My beetroot were up to about 2inches high yesterday but today have all vanished, a whole row of them! So today I did what Monty suggested, and lifted every pot on the patio next to the veg plot to search for slugs and snails. From a total of 25 pots I collected so many that after 40 I stopped counting! From giant 5inch long green slugs to the tiny grey ones, I was amazed. Obviously there are probably just as many in the soil of the veg plot, but at least I feel I've done something towards protecting what's left. Was going to order some nematodes but when I saw the price I thought I may as well buy veg from the supermarket instead of growing it!

Composting green seed heads

I have a bucket by the back door which I put screwed up newspaper in the bottom of then all the veg peelings and any compostable stuff goes on top. That way there's always a mix when I empty it into the compost bin. An easy way to always have a brown and green balance, it means that the bucket doesn't get smelly either.

Don't know if it's the weather or just that I've ignored it but it's blooming it's socks off this year!

Too early for beans?

I'm so pleased that I have planted all mine today and already they are twirling round the trellis and canes. Some are up a tall south facing fence, the others on an A frame like the photo above.

I was well organised this year and started my beans off on a damp cloth overnight in the airing cupboard. They had shoots within 48 hours. I did this because they were seeds I had saved from plants I'd grown 2 years ago and I wasn't sure if they would grow. This way I could see which ones wanted to get going, and that the seeds were not too old.

Thank you all, I'll do those straight away as we are due some rain and it will water them in.
