Calling Mrs P - or anyone who can grow Verbena bonariensis from seed

Posted: 19/07/2012 at 22:47

Mine are a good 10inches tall now but I put some in pots to grow on a bit and the slugs have nibbled the main stem near the soil so they've all fallen over! When I pot the others up I'll have to keep them somewhere safer! Might do like MR BEAN and his marrow and construct a moat!

Can anyone name this please

The photo with the yellow flower and the flower head with the holes in it is a Phlomis.(Jerusalem Sage) as Leggi says. I've got it in my garden and the seed heads are lovely dried and sprayed silver in Xmas decorations. This plant can get very big though so beware. I grew mine from seeds from my Mum's plant.

Runner beans

I keep finding the flowers on the ground and hardly any tiny beans on the plants. I think the windy weather we've had is blowing them off, or just not warm enough to bring out the bees.

Talkback: Big Butterfly Count

Posted: 19/07/2012 at 21:57

We've had so much wind and rain that I don't think the butterflies can fly around. I have 3 different buddleias and 2 types of scabious specially grown for the butterflies, but I've only seen 2 cabbage-whites and a brown unknown one, so far this year. Maybe if this weather warms up we will be luckier. Fingers crossed.

I had some skeletal leaves on my Stellata a couple of years ago and thought something was wrong with the plant. I had it in a pot close to the wall, and after I moved it away from the wall the leaves started to remain intact. I think slugs or snails were walking up the wall and eating the leaves from the reverse. Since I've moved it into the centre of patio I've not had them problem again.

Could that be your problem?

Lily beetle

I don;t usually like using sprays but where my lilies are concerned I just have to use Provado. One spray around April time and so far fingers crossed I have not seen one beetle. I had one year when they were all decimated and I vowed never to let that happen again. I LOVE my lilies!

Might try the garlic spray next year as I've grown quite a few this year, so I'll try not to eat them all.

Thanks for the tip-off! Though last year I left it a bit longer and bought lots at 20p per packet! Not the ones I'd planned to buy , but could not resist the temptation!

July in the garden!!

Remind me not to ever buy a house built on clay soil! The borders are flooded again today, despite hubby and I baling out 50 full buckets from the gullys around the lawn yesterday! We just got it down to a trickle at the bottom by tea time then it started to rain and it's rained all night and still going strong. Can't walk down to the GH unless we put wellies on as the grass and patio are under 2 inches of water. Where does it all come from. I'm rather depressed as we've both got backache from all that lifting yesterday and now it looks as if we didn;t do it. All your photos are fabulous and I'm fed up that our garden is unworkable, and will be for days yet.

July in the garden ! Huh! it's July in the water meadows here!

Slugs and snails

The flour and water is working. I emptied the pot this morning to find ovewr 20 slugs and 2 more snails. A bumper catch for last night! Some of the slugs were just small about 1cm long but other sizes up to a 3inch one! I'm well chuffed and the delphiniums are still standing. Hurrah!

Yes the pot of water and flour works. 3 slugs the first night, then 4 slugs and 2 small snails the next night. I positioned it near my delphiniums so I guessed I'd catch some. Maybe I should surround the delphs with a moat full of flour & water! Im so desperate to get them growing that I'll try anything!
