Tomatoes - in or out

Posted: 08/04/2014 at 20:27

sorry to hijack somewhat. i have some tomato seedlings going - sown march 15. they are in 3inch or so pots. red alert and gardeners delight. they have been grown on a west facing windowsill, and remain there now. i only have a plastic greenhouse outside. im wondering whether its still too cold to put them out. plus, i dont have access to them in the day to open the zip on a hot day. whats the best thing to do? they seem to be growing ok, not particularly fast though.

Zoomer, as they go dormant and send out suckers im sure transplanting them wouldnt be a problem. but ..someone with more expertise may come and burst my bubble on that one

in any case, plant them when dormant, which is November - March.

Hi there. Dove, it might not be visible from the pic but yes i have cane supports that i put in when planting them. its been very sunny today but very heavy rain yesterday, so they should be quite moist but i have given them a little water after taking the photos anyway to be sure.

tootles, i split my canes up, and cut them down to around where you see them now - about 2-4 inch above soil level. not sure what to suggest with yours being planted together, hopefully someone with more knowledge can advise. at a guess they might struggle to grow strongly and might just be a smaller clump of weaker growth ?

whats this?

ooops. well its at my dads house, not mine, and i wont be here long. there are weeds of all sorts in his big garden and there is little time to sort them out to be honest

another progress thread

this time its raspberry .. tulameen. i bought this in january reduced from B&Q - £3 for 5 canes. i potted them up as seen, 2x in a 46cms pot, 1 tulameen cane and 1x autumn bliss cane in each pot.

theyve put on decent foiliage growth from zero, although these are from suckers from the main/old cane. how do they look? this is my first raspberry growing attempt so i have no idea how they should be looking now:

Hi everyone

well, its been a while since i sown my first seeds (15 march). hopefully they are doing ok, see pics below. they are currently still on the window sill (west facing). i now have a plastic growhouse, which is ready to use, but im not sure whether its wise to move any of these outside into it. i am out more or less all day (745am - 6/7pm) so will not be able to open the growhouse if it gets too hot.

any suggestions on whats next for these little fellows?

tagetes and lettuce:

thanks for the tips Steve. would you prick all these out now, even those without true leaves yet? it would be easier if i could do it all today, rather than do it in batches during the week ... but if i have to wait for the others to come through a bit stronger then ill wait. the aubretia and parsley in particular look like they are too small to handle now, so should i leave those and just prick out the tomatoes, marigolds and lettuce?

i have 2 trays of 3 inch pots (so about 100 in total. better to have more than not enough!) ready for the bigger plants, eg tomatoes to go into.

planting them deeper - so i dunk them in with the seed leaves just above the compost surface?

(L to R) Calendula, Lettuce, Dainty Marietta, Tagetes

 Tagetes close up:

 Lettuce close up:

 Calendula close up:

how do they look? the tagetes are the first to come through with true leaves .. are these now ready to prick out?

lettuce look like they have 1 true leaf, the dainty are coming through just about and the calendula still havent produced theirs.

by the way - when pricking these out - i plan to put them 1 each per module cell in a new tray. i used John Innes 1, do i use the same again or it do they need some nutrients now they are growing on?

Thanks everyone ..
