Brugmania never flowered

Posted: 17/08/2014 at 11:13

I have had Brugmania before which never wintered that well due to lack of air flow around them . They rotted rather than the cold getting to them.

But this years catalogue brought plant seemed to grow well from the small thing that arrived thru the post back in May but has Failled to produce a single flower & I'm guessing mid to late August regardless of variety I might have been sent is to late in the season for it to start now ??

Any idea's what went wrong ???

Leaking Oak Barrel

Not considered that option which would be the easiest one perhaps. Will try the twating of the rings with an hammer next time it rains. That might help

The rings all appear to be riveted in a uniform fashion all around the barrel. I think those are there for a purpose rather than just show I will have to inspect them better this evening.

Told we are due lots more rain this week/weekend so would like to sort this out. The PVA seems a good idea I did think of bathroom sealant but it says not to be used under water. The barrel cost a £100 plus so I thought it was going to be the Mutts Nutts & so much better than the blue plastic ones I could have brought for £30

We have a large oak barrel which we use as a WaterButt had it for a couple of years now. To be honest it as Always had a slight leak/drip which as been a pain. But since the last dry period which lasted a couple of weeks the water within was used on various plants around the house.

Then when it started raining again over the recent weekend the water runs out of the gap between several panels quicker than the butt can fill from the guttering !! I was out there in the pouring rain trying to re seat the panels without any success & it is possible to see day light between a number of panels. It is not possible to follow item seen on websites that say fill and roll barrel because the top been removed to turn into a Butt

Is it Right or Wrong

I dont think there is likely to be anykind of presevation order on any of the stuff growing in either our garden or neighbours. The garden was a bit of a jungle prior to his purchase. The protential Damage roots can cause to footings & the likes are regularly heard of & the effect on lawn space with these roots stretching the lenght I have very little knowledge of . Other than they look grotesque & the likelyhood of someone injuring them selves on them is high.

I await your comments / ideas

Is it Right or Wrong

Ok people this is a question of ethic's I have been instructed to sort out my sons newly brought garden Which is a labour of love Not reward !!! The latest problem I have encountered is one of tree roots laying just below the surface or often thru the soil and upon the surface. My intention is to dig up or pull up which ever and remove from the ground.

Alas I have noticed that several roots appear to be coming under the hedge from the neighbours gardens and hence their tree's !!!!!! Do I dig/chop/pull these roots up and remove ????? I expect the removal of them Could be deprimental to the well being of the tree's they come from

DO I DO IT ??? OR NOT ???

Discount supermarkets

I was NOT getting at the Dutch or the Germans it just that the 2 nationwide discount supermarkets are from Germany !! Aldi & Lidl (well I'm not so sure about the latter ) and I'm quite sure we knew most of Bulbs/Plants in most shops in the country comes from Holland.

I am also aware that one can walk around Wilco/Morrisons/Tesco ect ect and see that their plant stock is also poorly looked after. So its not just Discount supermarkets that treat their products in this way. Recently I have noticed the Waitrose in our town have started having plant trolleys outside their stores with WELL WATERED specimens on them regardless of the time of day one passes. More expensive Yes worth the extra ?? Possibly

The impact on profits should I think make them look at this matter . The Aldi i visited because my local one had not taken any stock had 30-40 fruit tree's which had been for sale at £9.95 which is outstanding value this was on a Monday the stock hit the shops on the previous Thursday. They had discounted them down to £5.95 in an attempt to shift them. At £2.94 I and several other customers said we would have taken a chance on the dried up wilting plants. There was also tolleys of Tomato plants & bedding plants in worse condition than the fruit tree's. I dought anybody else would have taken a chance on either of the plants so their wastage in that one shop alone on that day must have ran into £1000's (list price ).

I find Aldi outstanding value for everyday items & their gardening range is far better than most if not all their competitors on price with simular qualities.I also come from retail & if our wastage was that great questions would be asked. So i quess that amount of wastage must be built into the sales forcasts.

A shame thats all I think
