Mine didn't come to anything either, grew a to a few inches then just died. Shame, because they are pretty.

A summer day in The Netherlands

Posted: 29/07/2015 at 18:27

I love your country, my husband and I have been many times staying at Duinrell, Wassenaar. What awful weather you have had. So sorry your garden has been so badly damaged but glad you are all safe and well.

Flying Ants

Posted: 15/07/2015 at 18:59

I have just been out into the garden to do RSPB Swift count, and the garden was filled flying ants. Its that time of year again when they leave the nest and take flight. What sight they are all flying around looking for a mate. I know some people don't like them when they are flying around, but it is nature and it is wonderful.

Oh I can not believe that you wish to get rid of this beautiful plant. I brought some back from Holland last year and this year they are flowering their socks off. I know they can be intrusive if not controlled but I love them and they are a very expensive plant to buy. They last so well in a vase as cut flowers too.

I don't very often post but I thought you may like to see my photos. We had a lovely drop of rain yesterday afternoon and I couldn't resist taking these photos.

The war on slugs-

I don't like to use pellets, I've been using slug stop granules, and so far so good. I like your idea Verdun of seaweed, is it something you can buy as I don't think I have seen that.

Swifts in decline

Posted: 20/05/2015 at 18:49

I love the Swifts and I look to the sky at the beginning of May. This year they arrived later than last year. I first saw them on the 7th this year and last year it was on the 1st May. I do the the Swift count with the RSPB every year. It is just so important to look after the Swifts, they fly so far to get here and give us such pleasure. I love the way the Dutch are looking after them, that is just brilliant.

VE Day

I found this weekend very moving. My mum told me many stories of war time, my dad was in the London Fire Service. Just last month my husband and I were in Belgium at the Menin Gate Memorial as it was 100 years since my grandfather lost his life in WW1 on 20th April 1915 They do the last post every night no matter what the weather. I thought there would only be a few people but there were over 500, very moving, an amazing thing to witness.

I didn't want to go to a college or evening class so Correspondence course was perfect for me. I did it for pleasure so there was no pressure to get your course work in. I could have gone on to get an RHS Qualification, but I didn't want it to be that serious. I wasn't doing it to get a job in Horticulture, just for pleasure.
