Flying Ants

Posted: 23/07/2012 at 18:38

Just been out into the garden to do a spot of watering and saw lots of flying ants flying around. Not everyones cup of tea but they really are a sight to behold as they fly up to mate, unfortunately the males will die afterwards. I never kill them as it usually only for one day but it just amazes me how they know when exactly to swarm when the weather is just perfect for them. Has anyone else see them yet?

I always use a pencil, and for names on labels I want to keep I paint over the name of the plant with clear nail varnish, works a treat.

Talkback: Growing and storing onions and garlic

Posted: 12/07/2012 at 18:10
I lifted my onions on Monday and they are now on racks in the greenhouse drying off nicely. as I've never grown them before I am really pleased with the crop I've got. I've got more now to plant in the Autumn so I hope they do just as well.

I'm not really keen on A T's new programme, it is so much like ground force. The first series was really good and very interesting. I did set my virgin box to record the series but I've cancelled it now. It is such a shame because Alan is such a good gardener (though Geoff Hamilton was my favourite).

Heavy showers today in Bournemouth and a couple of rolls of thunder. The rain spots were very large, the old wives tale says that it is a sign of heat. Still, we can hope can't we?

Talkback: Growing cucumbers

Posted: 10/07/2012 at 18:45
I'm also growing cucumbers in the greenhouse, last year I grew them outside. Like you it has been great having the greenhouse to keep on gardening, as I write this it is pouring down again. Tomatoes I had in hanging baskets have got blight because of this weather, I wish now I had taken them into the greenhouse. The greenhouse tomatoes are doing really well though. It does seem so unfair, when you think of the countries that are desperate for rain and never see it and we have more than we know what to do with.
