Giant Hebe

Posted: 26/07/2012 at 19:06

My goodness, I have never seen such large hebe. And I thought mine was spreading a lot, this one make mine look-----well, small. I always give mine a trim in the spring and it alway flowers its socks off every year. Yours is such a beauty it would be a shame to take it down. Sorry I haven't been much help in telling you what you should do, but it is just stunning.

I have done the swift count Kate, counted 40 swooping across the sky. They are just beautiful.

getting on with the neighbours

Posted: 24/07/2012 at 17:30

We are very luckly where we live, our neighbours both sides keep their gardens looking nice. I feel so sorry for you Grandma I do know what it is like to have difficult neighbours as we have had a neighbour from hell in the past. (thank goodness they have gone). As for your dividing boundary walls, if they keep saying it belongs to them, then fine, because when it needs repair they will be the ones to  pay for it. I only have a small garden and a nearly all of my plants are in pots even two Laurels which have been in pots for over ten years and they grow so well with a little love and attention. I do hope you can sort it out. Why do some people have to be so nasty, and where is the point in them arguing it will get them no where in the end all it will give them is raised blood pressure. Good luck.

Alstroemeria Seeds

Thank you geoff for your reply. I have read the Thompson & Morgan link, I do like a challenge but it does seem rather a long winded way of getting them germinate. If I do manage to catch some seeds I maybe tempted, I'll let you know.

Hi, Does anyone know if it is it ok to sow Altroemeria seeds now. I have two pots full of these beautiful plants that were given to me and I would like to grow some from seed,

I love the swifts as well Kate. I look for them every year in May and I so look forward to hearing first one screeching high in the sky, they always seem to arrive here in Bournemouth in the beginning of May and I always make a note in my diary and when they leave in August.

Flying Ants

Posted: 23/07/2012 at 18:38

Just been out into the garden to do a spot of watering and saw lots of flying ants flying around. Not everyones cup of tea but they really are a sight to behold as they fly up to mate, unfortunately the males will die afterwards. I never kill them as it usually only for one day but it just amazes me how they know when exactly to swarm when the weather is just perfect for them. Has anyone else see them yet?

Permanent Markers

I always use a pencil, and for names on labels I want to keep I paint over the name of the plant with clear nail varnish, works a treat.
