Mystery foliage in gifted bouquet.

The John Redmond variety looked good, self fertile and like you say, it would be good under trees.  We have a Yew with a woodpile close to it for the hedgehogs.  Thank you.

Thank you everyone, it is even more interesting than I thought.  Having looked at as many photos as I can find on here I think it must be the Hard Ruscus as it is definitely not spikey.  I can't see any with the flowers underneath in the photos apart from a variety called augustiflolius but that had slimmer leaves, well they are not actual leaves apparently.   But, I am sure that you have named the plant for me, so many thanks.  And yes, the bouquet was lovely.  It was my birthday in mid December and I was given 3 lots of flowers.  I always keep them in the cool porch and am down to the last few pinks now plus this foliage which is still as good as new.

No, don't think it is a type of Myrtle.  The really odd thing is that these tiny flowers are mostly sprouting from under the leaf with not as many from the top of the leaf.  They send out a fine shoot with one or two branches with then has a tiny white flower with 6 spokes rather than petals.  Weird!

That is a possibility.  Not quite like in the photo so will have a search to see if is a different variety.   Thank you.

Sorry people!  Not a quiz.   No, it is nothing like a fern and nor is it at all prickly.  The leaves are about 2 inches long, similar shape to privet but much paler, slightly arched and not leathery.  The 'flowers' are appearing on both the top or bottom of the leaf, about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch long, white, have a longish bit that then opens out into a starry shape rather like the individual flower heads on cow parsley etc that grows on the roadsides.

Have some fascinating pieces of greenery still going strong from a bouquet I was given about 7 weeks ago.  The leaves are a mid green colour, appear in both pairs, triples or singles on the stem but most oddly have what looks like flowers coming from them.  On the underside of each leaf is a vein going halfway along and from the tip of that vein there are little flower like growths that may be either on the top or underside of the leaf.  I have never seen them before and would love to know what they are.  Does anyone reading this know what they are?

Setting up a large wooden planter.

True about a replacement bottom plank really,  just being nostalgic as a gift from our sons & their families.     Good idea for a garden membrane or even one for grandchildren night sheet at the base !   Plus using bubble wrap or similar on lower planks too.

As for what to put in it   ....  so much scope that I am overwhelmed at the moment.  Never ,ever dreamt of having such an incredible piece of kit,  ever !

We have been given a beautiful wooden (pine maybe?) planter.  It is about 5 ft long and 3 ft across and is on a stand about waist high.  I am so thrilled with it that I really want to try to look after it so that it lasts as long as possible.  It has had 3 good coats of linseed oil and seems to have absorbed as much as poss.  There are some drainage holes in the central bottom plank but am wondering about putting in a layer of gravel now or even, don't laugh, a disposable child's night time bed sheet.  They let moisture out one way only.  Is that a ridiculous idea or would it go some way to keeping the timber drier?

Clearing nettles

Thank you Blueboots.  I have made a bit of progress with Roundup and another one so will win in the end but very much liked the SBK.  Will have to persist so I can move the chickens further over that way and keep the rest more manageable.
