Asparagus

Posted: 26/03/2017 at 13:39

I've just been told that asparagus from Norfolk polytunnels is expected in the farm shop in a little over a week, all being well.

No date for the field grown crop yet.

I think it's a bit early - the Norfolk commercial growers don't expect any field grown asparagus to be ready until mid April at the earliest.

The soil should start warming up with the warmer weather forecast for next week - that should wake the crowns up a bit.

Agapanthus

I have mine in a bowl shaped terracotta container 17" diameter 8" deep.   I planted 3 agapanthus Sky Rocket in there three or four years ago and they've grown, multiplied and flowered beautifully each summer.

I used a mix of half and JI No 3 loam-based compost and MPC, with a few handfuls of added horticultural grit and I've not renewed the compost yet ........ I might do so early next spring, if I get out into the garden before they start into growth ... I was too late this spring.

White Fungus on fibre pots

Posted: 26/03/2017 at 13:03

As far as I'm aware, unless someone has an extreme susceptibility/allergy there should be absolutely no problems.

My OH has a tendency to asthma triggered by cats and strongly scented flowers, but has never shown any problems when we have lots of sweet pea seedlings etc in fibre pots (complete with white fungus) on the windowsills.

Just back from the GC with a car boot full of big bags of 'soil conditioner' and a small one of MPC, a ball of twine, some birthday cards ........................................................ and two pulmonaria      Opal and EB Anderson

It's those dratted sticky labels again ...................

As Bob has said, perfectly normal - it's these fungi that help to break down the pot when you plant your seedlings out in the bed.
