I would mulch with one 50 litre bag of farmyard manure per 1.5 sq metre every autumn   I would also incorporate grit and compost into the soil when preparing planting sites for shrubs etc.

Recommend a tree?

There's no way I'd site a tree of that type and potential size anything like 10 ft or even twice that from a house and if you do and have close neighbours I'd expect them to be taking legal advice as the impact of its roots on the subsoil is likely to affect their home as well as yours.

If you're not convinced I suggest you consult your property insurers.

Lantana says:

...  Have started putting a blanket across the end of the bed for the last few nights.

Same here Lantana, although we still have the summerweight duvet on - the thicker one would be too much but some nights at about 2am simply pulling the blanket up over the duvet is just what's needed

I love leafcutter bees   They're fascinating - I'm so chuffed when one chooses to visit my roses.  I know the rose leaves don't look too beautiful afterwards, but when you think of the precision with which the bee cuts them, and then sometimes you can follow the bee as it carries the discs to wherever it's chosen for it's offspring ......... wonderful
