Tomatoes

I harvested a few cherry tomatoes this morning, January 16th, on my glazed balcony. They are still growing despite it being dark from about 3.30 p.m till about 8.30 p.m. It is minus 9 C outside but since I have the door open it is +10 on my glazed balcony.

Cherry tomatoes are fastest, easiest, more nutritious, hardiest and tastiest. Mine look like small red plums. I picked about 40 on my glazed balcony between 30 November and mid December when it is only light between some time after 9 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. It is minus 4 C outside but the cherry tomato plants are still alive. I do not know the type of cherry tomato I have. Someone was given one that fell off the stand in a store. She saved seeds, raised plants and gave me 3. I saved seeds from the bumper harvest and sowed them March 1st. As they grew I took cuttings which rooted within a week in water and potted them. Later I gave away over 30 plants to friends.

Phaleonopsis orchids should never be watered by placing them in a bowl of water. Water can collect at the crown and if that is not dried off completely the orchid will get crown/root rot which is fatal if not treated immediately. The proper way to water Phaleonopsis is to pour water over the bark it is in taking care not to get any on the leaves. The water will run straight through. Repeat after about 5 minutes. Then let the pot stand in the sink so all the water drains away. The pot must not stand in water when it is put back because the roots will rot if it does. A good idea is to have it stand on terracotta balls with a little water that does not reach up to the bottom of the pot the Phaleonopsis is in. That increases the humidity which the orchid likes.

Is it high or low nitrogen fertilizer? I want to know how to make a natural fertilizer with low nitrogen and therefore suitable for fertilizing geraniums (pelargoniums).

Adam, thank you for the tip. Which of these liquid feeds made of leaves makes a low nitrogen fertilizer suitable for Geraniums?
