Thanks for all your responses. I will take it out as soon as I can as it looks like it is about to flower and I wouldn't want to spread it around the neighbours!

I have the same plant, possibly weed (!), that keeps appearing in my borders. It is quite fast growing and has a thick main stem. Pics attached. I've left them for now as I sowed some wild flower seeds in the borders in the spring and am wondering if it could be something from that pack. Is it a weed? Or if a plant, what is it and how big does it get? I may have to move them if they get too large. Thanks for your help

What tree/shrub is this?

Thank dove and addict. I've searched on google and it does look like a beech tree. Not aware of anything nearby. Perhaps the wind or a bird dropped it there. I'll better get it out this weekend then. thanks for your advice.

Can anyone identify this tree/shrub for me please? It has appeared on it's own over the last few months and is now about 3ft high. if it is a large tree i would like to remove it now before it gets too big and too close to the boundary wall. Thanks.

No leaves on middle 1/2 of purple leaf birch

Thanks nutcutlet. It's good to wait for another opinion before I start cutting off branches here and there! I will try cutting off the bottom branches and wait for the top to fill out as I would really like to add height to the garden rather than cutting it back to grow as a bush.

Bumping this up the list

No leaves on middle 1/2 of purple leaf birch

I planted a purple leaf birch tree about 2 years ago (planted during the winter, bare root) and there has never been any leaves on the middle section of the tree. There are a few thin branches coming from the main stem but they look dead and there are no buds on them. This has been the same each year since it was planted. There are leaves on the lower branches and lots on the top.

Do I cut off the branches and hope new growth forms from the stem? And what could have caused this?

Hope the pictures are ok.

Excellent, thanks for your reply. Yes, the architectural leaves threw me and I didn't want to get rid if it just in case! Will remove it ASAP.

Hi. I have a large, fast-growing plant that has appeared in my border that I do not know whether is a weed or not. I have left it to grow so far as I know I planted something in that spot last year but I can't remember what! The reason I have now questioned whether it is a weed is because I've seen the same thing growing behind my house on the edge of a field. My neighbour says she removed one from her front garden a few years ago (not knowing whether it was a weed or not either) and said it has thousands of tiny needles/thorns growing up its stems, and gloves should be worn when taking it out. Any help appreciated. Pic (hopefully) below. Thanks.
